Digital transformation is a crucial momentum in strengthening the role of the Merah Putih Cooperative as a driver of the people’s economy at the village level. Amidst increasingly rapid technological developments, village cooperatives are required to adapt to remain relevant and competitive in the face of modern economic dynamics. With technological support, the Merah Putih Cooperative has a significant opportunity to grow into an independent and highly competitive village economic center.
Villages have enormous economic potential, spanning agriculture, fisheries, livestock, crafts, and even locally-based micro-enterprises. However, various limitations, such as market access, minimal promotion, and weak distribution systems, often hinder the development of this potential. Digital transformation provides a real solution to these challenges.
Through the utilization of digital platforms and marketplaces, superior village products can now be marketed more widely without regional boundaries. Farmers, fishermen, MSMEs, and other cooperative members have the opportunity to introduce their products directly to consumers quickly and efficiently. This is a crucial step in increasing village incomes while strengthening the local economy.
Digitalization also encourages the creation of more modern and accountable cooperative governance. With the use of digital-based administrative applications and financial systems, all transaction recording processes can be conducted transparently and in real time. Cooperative members can easily monitor business development, financial reports, and savings and loan activities through an integrated system. This transparency is a key factor in building member trust in the cooperative. As trust increases, community participation in developing the cooperative will also strengthen.
The Merah Putih Cooperative also plays a strategic role in supporting financial inclusion in rural communities. Through digital financial services, communities who previously had difficulty accessing banking services can now utilize various transaction facilities more easily and securely. Digital payments, fund transfers, and app-based savings and loan services are practical solutions that bring rural communities closer to the modern economic ecosystem.
Farida Dewi Maharani, Director of the Media Ecosystem at the Ministry of Communication and Digital Economy, stated that the government ensures that technological infrastructure development does not stop at network availability alone, but also that it can be optimally utilized to drive community-based economic growth. Therefore, the Ministry of Communication and Digital Economy continues to strengthen the role of the Merah Putih Cooperative as a driving force for local MSMEs in various regions.
On the other hand, digital transformation has also opened up significant opportunities for young people in villages to actively participate in the development of cooperatives. Previously, cooperatives were often perceived as traditional economic institutions that were less attractive to young people. However, with the advent of digital innovation, this image is beginning to change. Young people can now contribute through cooperative social media management, digital marketing, application development, and creative business innovations based on village potential. Youth involvement provides a new energy that can encourage village cooperatives to be more dynamic, innovative, and adaptive to current developments. The collaborative spirit fostered within cooperatives aligns with the creative and open-to-change nature of the younger generation.
The advent of digital technology also opens up significant opportunities for cooperatives to expand the market for superior regional products. Micro-enterprises within cooperatives have greater opportunities to increase turnover and strengthen the branding of local products. This demonstrates that digital transformation is not simply a change in work tools, but a strategic step in increasing the added economic value of the community. The Merah Putih Cooperative can become a driving force for the regional economy by leveraging technology as a bridge between local potential and modern market needs.
Meanwhile, Coordinating Minister for Food Affairs Zulkifli Hasan stated that the Red and White Cooperative program is one of the government’s strategic steps to improve the quality of human resources in rural areas. According to him, the program is not merely an effort to strengthen the village economy, but also a long-term investment to create more independent and competent village communities. With sustainable systems and digital transformation, the government aims for villages to have a strong economic foundation and be able to compete in the future.
Strengthening the Red and White Cooperative through digital transformation also has a very positive social impact. Strong cooperatives will create a more independent village economic ecosystem, reducing dependence on
