KAMI Maneuvers to Use Labor Demonstrations to Add to the Political Situation

The Coalition for Action to Save Indonesia (KAMI) continues to seek the stage at all times. This time, KAMI tried to influence the people by riding labor demonstrations which in fact worsened the political situation in Indonesia.

The Coalition for Action to Save Indonesia or KAMI have issued an announcement as a form of support for the workers’ national strike action plan. It is known, the national strike action will be attended by 5 million workers to reject the omnibus law ratification of the Work Creation Bill into Law.

In the latest KAMI statement signed by the Presidium Gatot Nurmantyo, Rochmar Wahab and M Din Syamsudin, the coalition affirms its stance in accordance with the edict read out in the KAMI declaration on August 18, 2020 at the Proclamation Monument.

KAMI rejection is based on his belief that if the bill in question becomes law, it will further eliminate national sovereignty, increase social inequality, damage the environment and are believed to impoverish and eliminate the bargaining position of the workers.

Gatot has also ordered our network throughout Indonesia as well as all other civil society movements wherever they are, to work hand in hand with the Indonesian workers in realizing their endeavors and struggles for rights for the realization of justice and the welfare of the people.

However, we also have to weigh carefully what the government has decided, not to reject the omnibus law just because of provocation by certain parties even though we haven’t read the contents of the omnibus law carefully.

Airlangga Hartarto as the Coordinating Minister for the Economy said, the Job Creation Bill should be able to provide benefits to all parties. This message was conveyed by him in his remarks at the DPR Plenary meeting last October 5 in Senayan, Jakarta.

Airlangga said, these benefits were contained in 186 articles and 15 chapters in the Work Creation Bill. Some of them are support for MSMEs. With the Job Creation Bill, said Airlangga, UMKM business actors in the licensing process only need to go through registration.

There is also support for cooperatives, such as the ease of establishing a cooperative by assigning a minimum of 9 members. Cooperatives are given the flexibility to implement sharia business principles, and can take advantage of technology.

For halal certification, the government also bears the cost of certification for MSEs. Acceleration and certainty are also carried out in the halal certification process, as well as expanding the Halal Inspection Agency, which can be carried out by Islamic Organizations and State Universities.

Regarding the progress of community plantations in forest areas, the community is also given permission to utilize land in forest areas.

Meanwhile for fishermen who previously had to go through several agencies for the fishing boat licensing process, the Job Creation Bill was sufficient to process it at the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries.

On the other hand, through the Job Creation Bill, protection for workers is increased. Among other things, the state is here to provide certainty for severance pay through the Job Loss Guarantee program managed by BPJS Ketenagakerjaan.

The government also contributes to strengthening the funds that will be managed by BPJS Ketenagakerjaan. The JKP program does not reduce the benefits of Work Accident Benefits (JKK), Death Benefits (JKM).

The working hour regulation is also adjusted to the Industry 4.0 work system and the digital economy. Even the Job Creation Bill does not eliminate the right to menstrual leave, maternity leave that has been regulated in the Manpower Law.

Meanwhile, business actors will get benefits such as convenience and certainty in obtaining business licenses, by implementing risk-based licensing and applying standards.

There is also the provision of rights and protection for workers / labor that can be done properly, which will increase competitiveness and productivity.

Entrepreneurs also receive incentives and conveniences in the form of fiscal incentives as well as convenience and certainty of services for investment.

However, the community and generally workers already think that the Job Creation Omnibus Law Bill has points that aim to benefit workers and employers.

Previously, the Confederation of Indonesian Workers Unions (KSPI) Said Iqbal stated that a number of labor unions supported President Jokowi’s move to facilitate investment. Moreover, the national economy has been shaken due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Said also said that so far the DPR has also accommodated the aspirations of the workers. One of them is by discussing the Employment cluster in the Work Creation Omnibus Law Bill last August.

KAMI are of course unethical to give statements that increasingly provoke workers, especially if their movement is allegedly looking for a political stage.
