Electricity has become a basic necessity, inseparable from human life and economic activity. Nearly every sector, from industry and public services to education and households, relies on a reliable power supply. Therefore, maintaining a reliable electricity system is not merely a technical matter, but also part of maintaining economic stability and public welfare.
Amidst rising national energy needs, the challenges of maintaining electricity supply are also increasingly complex. Climate change, increased electricity consumption, and the dynamics of primary energy supplies are factors that the government must anticipate to prevent service disruptions. These conditions demand policies that are not only responsive but also oriented towards strengthening the electricity system in the long term.
The current government is committed to ensuring a secure electricity supply throughout Indonesia. This is being done through strengthening primary energy supplies, improving power plant reliability, and developing transmission infrastructure capable of supporting a more integrated national electricity system.
Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Minister Bahlil Lahadalia stated that the government has ensured a secure coal supply for PLN’s power plants, ensuring the public does not need to worry about potential power outages. He added that the government continues to coordinate with all stakeholders to ensure the plants’ primary energy needs are met.
This statement signals that the government does not want energy supply issues to disrupt electricity services to the public again. Past supply disruptions provide an important lesson: the primary energy supply chain must be consistently maintained to ensure optimal power plant operations.
Bahlil also emphasized that power outages due to coal shortages must no longer occur. He stated that the government has taken various expedited measures to ensure the primary energy supply for PLN remains secure, ensuring uninterrupted service to the public.
Coal supply security is crucial because coal-fired power plants remain the backbone of the national electricity system. When primary energy supplies are disrupted, the impact is immediately felt by both the industrial sector and the wider community. Therefore, strengthening energy supply governance is a government priority.
However, maintaining electricity reliability requires more than just ensuring the availability of fuel for generating plants. Distribution systems and transmission networks must also be strengthened to ensure optimal distribution of generated electricity throughout the region.
Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources spokesperson Dwi Anggia stated that the government, along with PLN, continues to ensure the electricity system, particularly in the Java-Bali region, is secure. He stated that various anticipatory measures have been taken to maintain a reliable electricity supply and anticipate increasing public demand.
Strengthening the electricity system is also crucial to supporting national economic growth. Businesses require a secure electricity supply to ensure smooth production. Power outages, even brief ones, can cause significant economic losses, particularly in the industrial and manufacturing sectors.
On the other hand, national electricity demand is expected to continue to increase with the development of industrial areas, the digitalization of the economy, and the growth of electric vehicles. Therefore, electricity infrastructure development must be designed not only to meet current needs but also to anticipate energy needs for decades to come.
Energy observer and Director of the Center for Public Policy Studies (PUSKEPI), Sofyano Zakaria, believes that the development of an electricity backbone network in Sumatra is a crucial foundation for the reliability of the national electricity system. He believes a robust transmission network will increase the flexibility of electricity distribution and strengthen the system’s resilience in the event of disruptions in a particular region.
This perspective demonstrates that electricity sector development is no longer solely focused on increasing power generation. Transmission infrastructure is now an equally important factor, serving to more efficiently connect power generation centers with electricity consumption areas.
Backbone development will also strengthen the integration of interregional electricity systems, allowing excess electricity supply in one area to be utilized to meet the needs of other areas. This model will increase efficiency while reducing the risk of supply disruptions due to system imbalances.
Going forward, the challenges facing the electricity sector are expected to grow, driven by rising energy demand and the goal of a clean energy transition. Therefore, the government needs to continue strengthening collaboration with PLN (State Electricity Company), businesses, and various stakeholders to ensure faster and more sustainable energy infrastructure development.
Thus, success in maintaining electricity supply is measured not only by the minimum number of blackouts, but also by the government’s ability to provide a resilient, efficient, and ready-to-face electricity system for future challenges. When electricity remains reliable, economic activity can continue, public services operate optimally, and people can live their lives with greater peace of mind.
