AIS Summit 2023: Indonesia Invites Island and Island Countries to Cooperate to Overcome the Impact of Climate Change
Bali – Indonesia hosted the inaugural Archipelagic and Island States (AIS) Forum ( AIS Summit), which was also attended by heads of archipelagic and island countries around the world. The host’s momentum was used as an activity to show the world that Indonesia has potential through natural resources, the tourism sector and various other potentials.
Executive Director of the Institute for Development of Economics and Finance (INDEF), Tauhid Ahmad said that as the host of the 2023 AIS Forum Summit, Indonesia was able to control the main issues of Indonesia’s interest in the AIS event itself.
“The 2023 AIS Forum Summit will benefit Indonesia, especially regarding regional cooperation with countries that have the same characteristics. “For example, Japan and the Philippines, which have the same characteristics, can collaborate with Indonesia on environmental issues, technology transfer from developed countries and so on,” said Tauhid in an interview with a national radio station in Jakarta.
Apart from that, the AIS Summit in Bali was also used as a show case, especially since it took place in Bali, which is one of the most strategic locations for world-class events .
“This has also been proven by the success of several other international events held in Indonesia,” he said.
Tauhid explained that the target of the 2023 AIS Forum Summit is that island and archipelagic countries can work together to reduce the impact of climate change.
This joint commitment was included in the results of the 2023 AIS Forum Summit, which was formulated in a joint agreement and MoU.
“The issues raised later need to be a common issue, especially at the world level, not just island and archipelagic countries, with Indonesia as a pioneer in voicing this issue. “Because the main and more important thing is how to save the earth and the future,” said Tauhid.
On the other hand, to show Indonesia’s commitment to supporting the green economy, the Indonesian government used 430 electric cars during this series of AIS Forum summits.
This was revealed by the Head of the Vehicle Section, General Bureau of the Ministry of State Secretary (Kemensetneg), Masduki, Saturday (7/10/2023) in Jakarta.
These environmentally friendly vehicles consist of four brands, namely 28 units of BMW type i7, 236 units of Hyundai (type Ioniq 6, 38 units and Ioniq 5 with 198 units), Toyota type bZ4X with 66 units and Wuling Air Ev with 100 units.
The BMW i7 will be used as a Very Very Important Person (VVIP) vehicle to serve guests of the Head of State. Meanwhile, the Hyundai Ioniq 6 is prepared as a Very Important Person (VIP) vehicle for ministerial and lower levels.

The advantage is that Indonesia can control various key issues at the AIS Summit. Moreover, Indonesia is known as the largest archipelagic country.
“The issue of environmental management at the AIS Summit includes technology transfer between participating countries in managing environmental problems,” said Tauhid in a dialogue program on Elshinta radio with the theme “The AIS Summit and Indonesia’s Important Role,” said Tauhid in an interview with Elshinta Radio.
He added that technology transfer is a good opportunity considering that Indonesia has the potential for new and renewable energy (EBT). This opportunity has great potential for cooperation between the countries participating in the AIS Summit.
As is known, Tauhid continued, the challenges currently facing island and archipelagic countries are climate change and maintaining marine biota. The target of this summit is to reduce to a minimum the impact of damage to archipelagic areas due to climate change.
“As well as advancing the people of the island region, especially the outermost island regions,” he said.
Apart from that, he said, it is hoped that this summit will benefit Indonesia, such as developing archipelagic tourism and Bali as the venue for holding the summit. Remembering that Bali is a tourist destination that already has a name in the eyes of the international world. The world of tourism will also benefit from this summit, especially beach tourism and sea tourism.
“The challenge is that not all island countries and archipelagic communities are developed because several factors such as transportation and other factors are hindered,” said Tauhid.
He explained that the positive impact of this summit included exchanging information between island and archipelagic countries in resolving problems that occurred. Another positive impact is the positive image that Indonesia is increasingly safe as a place to hold international events and this will have an impact on investors.
Previously, the Executive Director of the Center for Maritime Studies for Humanity, Abdul Halim, said the AIS Summit had four focused objectives.
“Adapting to climate change, promoting the sustainability of the blue economy, handling plastic waste, and strengthening sustainable marine governance,” said Abdul.
He explained that of the four focuses, the Indonesian government needs to utilize its delegation to campaign for substance, management models and bilateral and multilateral cooperation.
“This (cooperation) can be oriented towards the prosperity of the people,” he said.

The AIS Forum 2023 consists of 51 island and archipelagic countries and a number of international organizations.
