Jakarta – President Prabowo Subianto continues to demonstrate his commitment to strengthening the blue economy as a major national development strategy that favors coastal communities and fishermen. Through the development of the Red and White Fishing Village (KNMP), the government is encouraging the creation of modern, productive, and independent coastal areas as part of a maritime-based national economic transformation.
On several recent occasions, President Prabowo emphasized that Indonesia possesses vast marine resources that must be optimally managed for the welfare of the people. The President stated that the global demand for animal protein continues to increase, thus giving Indonesia’s maritime sector a strategic opportunity to become a new national economic force.
“Indonesia is ready to invest heavily in the blue economy. We have a very rich ocean, and this must be a source of prosperity for the people, especially coastal communities and fishermen,” said the President.
The Head of State also emphasized that the development of the Red and White Fishing Village is not merely infrastructure development, but part of a larger strategy to create new centers of economic growth in coastal areas. According to him, modernizing fishing villages will increase catch productivity, strengthen the fisheries distribution chain, and open up new business opportunities for local communities.
“The Red and White Fishermen’s Village must become a model of coastal independence. We want Indonesian fishermen to live more prosperous lives, have good facilities, access to modern production facilities, and a well-managed environment,” said the President.
The government’s commitment is beginning to show tangible results. The Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) reported that the first phase of construction of 65 Red and White Fishermen’s Villages was 100 percent completed by the end of April 2026 and ready to enter the operational phase. This program is one of the government’s priorities in accelerating maritime-based economic development while strengthening equitable development in coastal areas.
Trian Yunanda, Head of the Coordinating Team for the Implementation of KNMP Phase I and II Development, stated that the completion of the first phase of construction is a crucial step in creating a more modern and integrated coastal economic ecosystem.
“We report that the KNMP Phase 1 construction work at 65 locations was 100 percent complete by the end of April 2026,” said Trian.
He explained that the government has also established a KNMP Operational Task Force to ensure that all constructed facilities operate optimally and are truly utilized by fishing communities. According to him, the operation of fishing villages will focus on strengthening productivity, efficient distribution of marine products, and economic empowerment of coastal communities.
“The task force’s role is to oversee the operational readiness of all constructed facilities so that they can be optimally utilized by coastal communities,” he continued.
In addition to developing fishing villages, the government is also continuing to strengthen the downstreaming and investment agenda in the maritime sector. This step is considered in line with President Prabowo’s vision to make Indonesia a global maritime power through sustainable management of marine resources with high added value. Strengthening the blue economy is also projected to create new jobs, increase fishery exports, and strengthen national food security amidst global economic dynamics.***
