The government ensures that the Public Schools program runs under strict supervision to ensure that educational assistance truly reaches those in need and is free from irregularities. This commitment is emphasized through multi-layered oversight involving the Ministry of Social Affairs, law enforcement officials, and the Corruption Eradication Commission. This program is considered a crucial part of the government’s efforts to expand access to education for extremely poor families while strengthening equitable social welfare across various regions.
Social Affairs Minister Saifullah Yusuf, also known as Gus Ipul, emphasized that Public Schools are specifically intended for community groups categorized as the most disadvantaged based on the National Socioeconomic Single Data (DTSEN). Therefore, the participant acceptance mechanism is not conducted through open registration, but rather through a direct government outreach process to ensure that assistance is truly targeted.
According to Gus Ipul, the government does not want programs aimed at the poor to be infiltrated by patronage practices, manipulation by certain individuals, or acts of corruption, collusion, and nepotism. He emphasized that the entire process was carried out in accordance with the President’s directives to ensure it was clean, transparent, and pro-poor. This affirmation also conveyed the message that the government would not allow for practices that could undermine the primary objectives of this social program.
This statement demonstrates the government’s efforts to maintain the credibility of the People’s School program from the initial stages of implementation. Amid heightened public attention to state budget management, anticipatory measures such as internal oversight and the involvement of oversight bodies are crucial to ensure public confidence in this educational assistance program.
The Ministry of Social Affairs also moved swiftly to address the issue of alleged price markups for shoes and school supplies under the People’s School program. Inspections and clarifications were conducted to ensure the entire procurement process complied with regulations and did not harm the state or the beneficiaries. This step demonstrates that the government is not turning a blind eye to public criticism and scrutiny.
Deputy Minister of Social Affairs Agus Jabo Priyono stated that the investigation into the procurement of school supplies is targeted for completion soon. He instructed the internal audit team to conduct a thorough and in-depth examination to ensure the results are truly objective and accountable. Once the process is complete, the results will be submitted to law enforcement officials for follow-up in accordance with applicable regulations.
Agus Jabo Priyono’s firm stance demonstrates the government’s commitment to maintaining the integrity of social programs. The government appears to recognize that oversight is not merely a paper commitment; it must also be realized through concrete action against any alleged violations. Thus, the People’s School program is not only a symbol of social concern but also an example of transparent and accountable governance.
In addition to highlighting the oversight aspect, Agus Jabo Priyono also commended the hard work of all levels of the Ministry of Social Affairs who continue to work towards the success of the People’s School program. He stated that the program requires solid cooperation because it concerns the educational future of children from underprivileged families. He also reminded all levels to continue working according to regulations and maintain unity in carrying out the state’s mandate.
Oversight of the People’s School program has also received serious attention from the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK). KPK Chairman Setyo Budiyanto assessed that the program has excellent objectives because it targets communities in need of educational assistance.
Setyo Budiyanto emphasized that the success of government programs is not solely measured by the amount of budget absorption, but also by the quality of benefits experienced by the community. Therefore, oversight of school supplies procurement is considered crucial to ensure that the items students receive are truly appropriate and meet their needs. This view demonstrates that budget management is now a primary focus in every strategic government program.
The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK)’s focus indicates that oversight of government programs is now stronger and more transparent. The presence of an anti-corruption agency in overseeing the implementation of social programs is considered to increase public trust and prevent potential irregularities early on. This step also signals the government’s desire to ensure that all social assistance reaches those in need without compromising on quality or value.
