Brutal OPM Attack in Mimika Again Disturbs Security for Civilians in Central Papua

MIMIKA – Violence allegedly carried out by the West Papua National Liberation Army-Free Papua Organization (TPNPB-OPM) has again claimed casualties in Central Papua. The shooting that occurred at Camp Wini Kalikuluk Mile 69, Tembagapura District, Mimika Regency, on Friday (May 8, 2026), resulted in civilian casualties and sparked panic among the community.

The incident occurred while residents were carrying out activities and gathering with family in a residential area. The atmosphere suddenly turned tense after the sound of gunfire was heard from the direction of Camp David, located across the river.

The Head of Information for the TNI Habema Operations Command, Lieutenant Colonel Inf. M. Wirya Arthadiguna, explained that security forces had previously detected suspicious movement around the MP 69 area before the barrage of gunfire erupted.

“Based on the monitoring results, two gunshots were heard from the direction of Camp David across the river, suspected to have originated from the OPM group led by Guspi Waker,” said Lieutenant Colonel M. Wirya Arthadiguna.

After that, the armed group reportedly opened fire in rapid succession towards the Camp Wini Kalikuluk area, located in the middle of a civilian settlement. TNI officers on the scene immediately took swift action, prioritizing the rescue of residents from the danger area.

“Based on the principle of public safety as the highest law, the top priority is evacuating residents, especially women and children,” stated Lieutenant Colonel M. Wirya Arthadiguna.

The evacuation efforts were carried out quickly to prevent further casualties. However, during the process, officers discovered a girl with a gunshot wound to her left shoulder. The victim was immediately taken to the nearest health facility on a makeshift stretcher.

“However, fate had other plans. On the way to the health facility, on Jalan Poros MP 69, the child was pronounced dead from her gunshot wound,” added Lieutenant Colonel M. Wirya Arthadiguna. M. Wirya Arthadiguna.

In addition to the fatality, another resident suffered a gunshot wound to the left calf and is currently undergoing intensive care. Witness accounts from residents at the scene also support the suspicion that the shots came from Camp David while residents were gathered inside the camp.

Teribupura Police Chief, First Inspector Firman, stated that police officers and joint units immediately moved to evacuate the victims to ensure prompt medical treatment.
“There are currently two fatalities. One, Narlince Wamang, is still in Tembagapura, and the other died at the Charitas Hospital,” said First Inspector Firman.

The security situation following the shooting is still being intensively monitored. At least 256 residents reportedly fled their homes and sought safer locations due to concerns about potential further disturbances.

Central Papua Police Chief, Brigadier General Jermias Rontini, ensured that security forces are continuing to investigate and investigate the incident to ensure the accuracy of all information provided.
