Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto attended the 48th ASEAN Summit in Cebu, Philippines, as part of the government’s strategic efforts to strengthen regional diplomacy amidst increasingly complex global dynamics. Indonesia’s presence at this high-level Southeast Asian forum reaffirmed Jakarta’s important position as a key driver of regional stability and cooperation.

President Prabowo arrived at the General Aviation Terminal of Mactan Cebu International Airport on Thursday afternoon local time. He was greeted by several high-ranking Philippine officials, including Philippine National Security Advisor Eduardo Oban. The welcoming ceremony was filled with honors, featuring an honor guard and traditional Philippine cultural performances, signifying the strong ties between the two countries.

President Prabowo’s presence in the Philippines is not merely to fulfill a routine ASEAN diplomatic agenda. The Indonesian government is utilizing the momentum of the 2026 ASEAN Summit to strengthen Indonesia’s strategic position amidst evolving global geopolitical and economic challenges. This forum serves as an important platform for Indonesia to promote strengthening regional cooperation, particularly in the areas of energy, food, trade, and digital economic transformation.

A significant highlight of President Prabowo’s visit came when the Head of State used a Maung light tactical vehicle as his official vehicle during an international event in the Philippines. This vehicle, produced by the national defense industry, is considered a new symbol of Indonesian diplomacy, prioritizing technological independence and pride in domestic products.

Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya explained that the use of the Maung for state events abroad is not merely about transporting the head of state. The government wants to demonstrate to the international community that Indonesia’s national strategic industry is capable of developing and confidently performing on the global stage.

According to Teddy, the Maung vehicle has been developed since President Prabowo was Minister of Defense, and production at PT Pindad continues to increase. The vehicle has also been used for various national needs, including supporting domestic strategic operations.

The use of the Maung in international forums is seen as a strong message regarding the progress of Indonesia’s defense industry. The government wants to demonstrate that domestically produced products can represent national identity and be part of Indonesia’s modern diplomacy in the ASEAN region.

This year’s ASEAN Summit is not only a forum for Southeast Asian leaders to meet, but also a strategic platform to showcase the progress of Indonesia’s national industrial sector. The government is striving to build Indonesia’s image as an independent, adaptive, and highly competitive nation in the face of global change.

The main agenda of the ASEAN Summit focused on the impact of global conflicts on the Southeast Asian region. Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, Airlangga Hartarto, stated that energy security, food security, and economic stability are key concerns for ASEAN leaders this year.

The Indonesian delegation, led by Airlangga, is also actively participating in the ASEAN Economic Community (AECC) meetings. In these forums, Indonesia advocates for strengthening regional economic integration, strengthening regional supply chains, and enhancing ASEAN’s competitiveness to remain a center of global economic growth.

The Indonesian government views strengthening ASEAN economic cooperation as a crucial step in maintaining regional resilience amidst global uncertainty. Therefore, Indonesia continues to promote structural reforms based on sustainability, digitalization, and strengthening the regional productive sector.

In addition to economic issues, discussions also included the development of the ASEAN Vision 2045, which aims to build a resilient, innovative, dynamic, and people-oriented region. Indonesia fully supports this vision, as it aligns with efforts to strengthen ASEAN’s position as an inclusive and highly competitive region.

Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Bahlil Lahadalia, revealed that President Prabowo is paying significant attention to energy and food issues at this ASEAN forum. The government considers these two sectors to be the main foundation of regional stability amid increasing global pressures.

According to Bahlil, nickel is one of the strategic energy commodities receiving attention, as it plays a crucial role in the development of the electric vehicle battery industry. Indonesia is currently one of the countries in Southeast Asia developing an integrated battery ecosystem from upstream to downstream.

The government is also opening up opportunities for cooperation with the Philippines regarding nickel supplies to support the needs of the national smelter industry. This step is seen as part of a strategy to strengthen the regional energy supply chain while strengthening ASEAN’s position in the development of the future energy industry.

In various forums attended during the ASEAN Summit, President Prabowo continued to emphasize the importance of regional solidarity to face increasingly complex global challenges. Indonesia believes that regional cooperation must be able to produce concrete solutions that directly impact the welfare of ASEAN communities.

The government’s active diplomatic approach also demonstrates Indonesia’s consistency in maintaining regional balance through dialogue, collaboration, and joint development. Amid global uncertainty, Indonesia strives to ensure ASEAN remains a stable, peaceful region capable of maintaining economic growth.

By actively participating in the 2026 ASEAN Summit in the Philippines, the Indonesian government reaffirms its commitment to strengthening regional diplomacy, encouraging strategic cooperation among member states, and building a more resilient and sustainable future for ASEAN.
