Indonesia’s economic transformation requires the support of human resources capable of keeping pace with developments in the business and industrial world. Technological changes, digitalization, and increasing global competition demand a workforce with competencies that meet market needs. In this context, the 2026 National Internship Program is one of the government’s strategic steps to strengthen the relationship between education and the workplace through the “link and match” concept. This program is expected to produce a productive, adaptable, and highly competitive workforce.
The increasingly dynamic development of industry presents unique challenges for the education sector. Many companies require workers who not only master theory but also possess practical experience, teamwork skills, and an understanding of professional work culture. This gap between graduate competencies and industry needs is one reason why it’s crucial to strengthen internship programs nationally.
Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto emphasized that economic development must be supported by superior human resources prepared to face change. Improving the quality of the workforce is crucial to achieving sustainable economic growth. Therefore, the government continues to promote various programs that improve skills and expand opportunities for people to gain work experience.
The 2026 National Internship Program provides participants with the opportunity to learn directly in a work environment. Through this experience, participants gain an understanding of production processes, work systems, and professional standards applied in the business world. This type of learning provides added value because participants can connect the knowledge gained during their education to practical work in the field.
Minister of Manpower Yassierli stated that the government will open registration for the National Internship Program (MagangHub) Batch II from July 15–28, 2026, targeting 50,000 participants in each batch. He also encouraged companies, ministries, and institutions to utilize the MagangHub platform by providing internship opportunities that match the competencies of college graduates, while emphasizing that each vacancy will undergo a verification process to ensure it is truly relevant to the needs of the workforce.
Yassierli added that overall, MagangHub Batch II is targeted to reach 150,000 participants with budget support of IDR 4.2 trillion, an increase from the previous batch which accommodated 100,000 participants. According to him, all participants will receive BPJS Ketenagakerjaan protection, while the government hopes that the absorption rate of participants as permanent employees can increase from around 30 percent in the previous program implementation.
In addition to improving technical skills, internships also develop professional work ethic. Participants gain experience in working in a disciplined manner, completing tasks on time, building effective communication skills, and working in a team. These skills are crucial for boosting self-confidence when entering the workforce.
For businesses, internship programs provide benefits in preparing prospective workers who understand the company’s operational needs. Companies also have the opportunity to identify participants’ potential early on, thus enabling more effective future recruitment processes. A close relationship between education and industry will foster a stronger employment ecosystem.
This program also fosters a culture of lifelong learning. Participants are encouraged to continuously improve their skills in line with technological developments and industry needs. The ability to continuously learn is a crucial asset for the Indonesian workforce to cope with the increasingly rapid changes occurring across various economic sectors.
The government is also focusing on ensuring equitable access to internship programs. The broader opportunities provided to communities in various regions, the greater the chance of creating a competent and productive workforce. This measure is expected to support equitable human resource development while strengthening regional economic growth.
The success of the National Internship Program requires collaboration between the government, the business world, universities, vocational schools, and training institutions. This synergy will enable the development of programs that truly align with industry needs. Continued collaboration will also strengthen the quality of vocational education and produce graduates who are better prepared to enter the workforce.
Improving the quality of the workforce will positively impact national productivity. A workforce with competencies that meet industry needs can increase efficiency, drive innovation, and strengthen company competitiveness. This will have a multiplier effect on investment growth, job creation, and improved public welfare.
Evaluation of program implementation is also crucial to ensure its continued benefits. Feedback from participants, businesses, and educational institutions can inform future program improvements. With ongoing evaluation, the National Internship Program will become increasingly relevant to evolving job market and industry needs.
By strengthening the link and match concept, enhancing work experience, and strengthening collaboration between education and business, the 2026 National Internship Program is expected to create a productive, competent workforce ready to face future challenges. Developing high-quality human resources is a crucial foundation for supporting inclusive economic growth, enhancing national competitiveness, and strengthening Indonesia’s sustainable development.
