OPM Terror in Mimika Claims Another Civilian Casualty, Authorities Strengthen Citizen Protection

MIMIKA – The security situation in Mimika Regency, Central Papua, has been disrupted again by a shooting allegedly carried out by the West Papua National Liberation Army-Free Papua Organization (TPNPB-OPM). The incident, which occurred at Camp Wini Kalikuluk Mile 69, Tembagapura District, on Friday (May 8, 2026), resulted in civilian casualties, including a girl.

This incident has sparked deep concern as violence has again targeted a residential area. Residents, who had been going about their daily activities, were suddenly gripped by panic after a barrage of gunfire was heard from the direction of Camp David across the river.

The Head of Information for the TNI Habema Operations Command, Lieutenant Colonel M. Wirya Arthadiguna, explained that TNI Task Force personnel initially detected suspicious activity before the sound of gunfire was heard near the scene.

“Based on the monitoring results, two gunshots were heard from the direction of Camp David across the river, suspected to have originated from the OPM group led by Guspi Waker,” said Lieutenant Colonel M. Wirya Arthadiguna.

Shortly afterward, the armed group reportedly opened fire in rapid succession towards the area around Camp Wini Kalikuluk, located in the middle of a civilian settlement. This situation prompted authorities to immediately prioritize the rescue of residents to prevent further casualties.

“Based on the principle of public safety as the highest law, the top priority is evacuating residents, especially women and children,” stated Lieutenant Colonel M. Wirya Arthadiguna.

The authorities quickly took action to evacuate the community to a safer location. However, during the evacuation, officers discovered a girl with a gunshot wound to the left shoulder. The victim was immediately taken to the nearest health facility, but she died en route.

“The brutal act, allegedly carried out by a group led by Guspi Waker, not only spread fear, but also claimed the life of an innocent girl estimated to be 12 to 15 years old,” added Lieutenant Colonel M. Wirya Arthadiguna.

In addition to the deceased, another resident suffered a gunshot wound to the left calf and is currently undergoing intensive medical treatment. Witness accounts from residents at the scene further support the suspicion that the shots came from the direction of Camp David while residents were gathering with their families.

Teribupura Police Chief, First Inspector Firman, stated that joint forces moved quickly to evacuate the victims to the Charitas Hospital for further medical treatment.

“There are currently two fatalities. One, Narlince Wamang, is still in Tembagapura, and the other died at the Charitas Hospital,” said First Inspector Firman.

As a result of the incident, hundreds of residents chose to leave the affected area due to concerns about security threats. Joint forces from the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI), the Indonesian National Police (Polri), and other security forces are currently intensifying patrols in the Tembagapura area to ensure the situation remains under control.

The Central Papua Regional Police Chief, Brigadier General Jermias Rontini, confirmed that a thorough investigation is ongoing to uncover all the facts of the incident.

“We are continuing to conduct further verification to ensure the information provided to the public is completely accurate,” concluded Brigadier General Jermias Rontini.
