CIDISS. The main characteristic of a democratic country is to hold elections periodically to elect leaders, both in the legislative and executive bodies. Election is a complex event, because this political event is not just choosing leaders, but also the ideological battle and the future of the country. For every region in Indonesia, this election event is also conducted to elect the head of the region, so we know the era of regional head election that is currently done simultaneously.
Behind the act of voting, voters have long political referrals, organizers require tremendous force and expense, while participants are risking everything for the seat of power. Decreasing the role of ideology in the life of society does not mean eliminating its influence in the political moment. Educated people must understand that choosing leaders should be based on rational considerations, which are good programs and qualified capacities.
But that judgment can fall apart when ideological issues arise. There was a split in voters as happened in the 2017 Jakarta Election, when Basuki Tjahaja Purnama (Ahok) succeeded in leading Jakarta, but refused to vote again due to religious differences. Another obstacle is the obstacle for election of regional heads organizers to prepare ballot papers. This is not a difficult thing but there are many obstacles that can disrupt the organizers to meet the requested deadlines, especially regarding the determination of voter lists.
In Indonesia, determining the list of voters, especially the list of permanent voters (DPT) is not easy. This is because the awareness of the Indonesian population is still weak to report related to changes in personal data or change of address. In fact, there are still many people in remote areas who do not yet understand the importance of having an identity.
We as a society would always expect election of regional heads to run smoothly without restraint, especially without conflict. However, the occurrence of errors from the organizers also cannot be avoided given the number of problems encountered.
