Jakarta — In order to support the development of the Indonesian Capital City (IKN) which is being developed as a smart, sustainable, and inclusive city of the future, the Indonesian Capital City Authority (OIKN) received policy briefs from research results from the University of Indonesia (UI). A total of 30 policy briefs were submitted through the Deputy for Green and Digital Transformation (THD) of OIKN, in an event entitled Policy Brief Dissemination: UI Researchers’ Contribution to IKN which took place at Swissotel Nusantara.

Deputy for Green and Digital Transformation of OIKN, Mohammed Ali Berawi, revealed that this policy brief is the result of a study by UI researchers on various important aspects to realize the IKN as an environmentally friendly and high-tech government center. “UI researchers actively provide recommendations and intellectual support for the development of the IKN as a smart, sustainable, and inclusive city,” explained Ali.

The policy brief prepared by UI covers four main clusters, namely the energy, food, and transportation cluster; social humanities; welfare and environmental conservation; and technology and informatics. Each cluster is designed to provide practical recommendations in realizing the concept of a sustainable city which is one of the national strategic priorities in the era of President Prabowo Subianto.

UI Vice Chancellor for Research and Innovation, Nurtami, said that this policy brief is UI’s second step in its role as a strategic policy advocate. The first step was taken in the context of Indonesia as part of the Group of Twenty (G20). “We want researchers to collaborate with related ministries and institutions so that the recommendations provided are integrated with government programs,” said Nurtami.

The selection of IKN as the focus of the study is based on its status as a National Strategic Project (PSN) that influences government policy in the long term. “The struggle to realize IKN as a new capital city requires deep thinking and innovative ideas that can be developed together,” added Nurtami.

This policy brief was prepared in a short time, only a month, while maintaining comprehensive research quality. Nurtami said that despite the short time, UI researchers were able to produce a brief that could be used as a reference for stakeholders, including OIKN, DPR/MPR, and local governments.

Some of the recommendations in the policy brief include the development of sustainable renewable energy, efficient agricultural practices to support food security, and the use of technology in transportation to improve connectivity and accessibility in the IKN. A collaborative approach between the government, local communities, and the private sector is also emphasized to achieve successful implementation.

In the long term, this policy brief is expected to be a strategic guide in the development of the IKN as a sustainable city that is able to compete in the international arena, in line with the vision of the government under the leadership of President Prabowo Subianto. (*)
