The President of the Republic of Indonesia, Joko Widodo (Jokowi) continues to direct and lead the rapid development of the construction of the Indonesian Capital City (IKN), including various infrastructures within it, one of which is the Airport.

The airport, which is designed to support air transportation in the new city area, not only aims to improve accessibility, but also highlights the environmentally friendly concept and strengthens the local cultural identity of Kalimantan.

With a focus on sustainability and environmental preservation, the airport is an integral part of the grand vision of the seventh President of the Republic of Indonesia in building a new capital city that is modern and in harmony with the environment.

Minister of Transportation, Budi Karya Sumadi revealed that IKN Airport is currently preparing to test the landing of large aircraft, which will further strengthen its function as the main gateway to the region.

After successfully landing the Presidential Aircraft RJ85, the airport runway has been expanded and reinforced to accommodate larger aircraft. The Minister of Transportation also explained that the progress of the runway construction, which has now reached 2,200 meters with a width of 45 meters, shows significant progress. With the completion of the runway thickening in October 2024, a trial landing of a larger aircraft will be carried out soon.

President Jokowi, as the main figure behind the development of the IKN, has ensured that the infrastructure in the area is built with attention to aspects of sustainability and local wisdom.

The construction of Nusantara Airport, in addition to being one of the symbols of the progress of the new city, also emphasizes the commitment of the Surakarta-born leader of the nation to environmentally friendly development. With the presence of an airport that prioritizes green principles and is oriented towards nature, the Capital City of Nusantara is increasingly ready to welcome a sustainable future.

In addition to increasing air transportation capacity, the airport design also prioritizes regional cultural elements. The three main architects involved in the construction of the airport terminal, namely Yori Antar, Adi Purnomo, and Reza Wahjudi, designed the terminal with a concept that combines traditional Kalimantan elements and modern touches.

According to Yori Antar, the terminal architecture will highlight Kalimantan culture by combining past traditions into a futuristic design. The IKN VVIP Terminal will be the embodiment of the integration between cultural heritage and modern development, making this airport a representation of regional pride.

Adi Purnomo, who is also an architect in the construction, added that the green building principle was fully applied in the construction of the airport. By adapting the surrounding environment, the terminal was built to resemble a typical Kalimantan longhouse that allows natural wind and light to enter the building.

The design is not only aesthetic, but also functional in saving energy, making the airport more efficient than the terminal in general. This is in line with the grand vision of the IKN which prioritizes the concept of smart city and sustainability, a principle that has been applied by the President of the Republic of Indonesia who has been in office since 2014.

The successful landing of the Presidential Aircraft RJ85 some time ago further emphasized the readiness of Nusantara Airport in serving flights. The Minister of Transportation said that the Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR) continues to thicken and verify the suitability of the runway for landing larger aircraft.

With a target runway length of 3,000 meters, the airport will be able to serve the landings of jumbo aircraft such as the B-777 300 ER and Airbus A380, which are the largest commercial aircraft in the world.

The development of Nusantara Airport is also inseparable from the grand concept of IKN which is designed to be a symbol of a sustainable city in Indonesia. The Minister of Transportation ensures that all airport infrastructure development is running according to target.

By the end of December 2024, the airport is expected to be fully operational, including serving international flights. The airport terminal, which covers an area of 7,350 square meters, will be able to serve thousands of passengers every day, making it one of the airports with the best facilities in Indonesia.

President Joko Widodo, not only built the IKN as a new center of government, but also as a symbol of the nation’s progress and innovation. Nusantara Airport, with an environmentally friendly concept and highlighting Kalimantan culture, is a real example of how the great vision of the nation’s leader born in 1961 is realized in the field. This development also strengthens the government’s commitment to accelerating equitable development, especially in areas outside Java.

The construction of Nusantara Airport not only has a significant impact on air transportation accessibility in the East Kalimantan region, but also brings great hope to the local community.

With a terminal that emphasizes the concept of green and architecture that combines traditional elements, the airport will be a gateway for thousands of people who want to see the progress of the new capital firsthand. Moreover, the airport also reflects the harmony between modern development and the preservation of local culture, something that the Head of State continues to fight for.

Overall, the Indonesian Capital Airport is a real proof of the serious efforts of the government under the direction of President Jokowi in building world-class, environmentally friendly infrastructure. With an expanded runway and a terminal that highlights regional culture, this airport is not only ready to serve air transportation needs, but also becomes a symbol of the success of sustainable development in Indonesia.
