Jakarta – The 2nd Indonesia-Pacific Parliamentary Partnership (IPPP) session in Jakarta opened the door to dialogue and communication, thus becoming a milestone in parliamentary diplomacy throughout the Pacific region among countries in the Pacific region.
Through the IPPP forum, Indonesia shows itself as a strong country in its active role in facing global challenges.
Chairman of the DPR RI, Puan Maharani, said that Indonesia and Pacific countries have similarities as fellow archipelagic countries, namely the same values of life that are upheld and the same challenges faced, such as the threat of climate change, disasters, and how to manage seas and waters.
“Based on these similarities, the focus is on developing cooperation on issues of mutual interest,” said Puan.
According to him, a peaceful, stable and prosperous Pacific region certainly makes a positive contribution to global peace and prosperity.
Previously, President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) conveyed the importance of the IPPP forum as a means of strengthening relations between Indonesia and Pacific countries and highly appreciated the Indonesia-Pacific parliamentary partnership.
“Parliamentary cooperation can be utilized for various experiences in finding joint solutions because parliament is a bridge between people’s aspirations and public policy,” said President Jokowi.
According to Jokowi, there are three important sectors that currently need joint and immediate handling, namely climate change, the blue economy and human resource development.
At the meeting of the Indonesian Parliament and the Parliaments of Pacific Countries, Deputy Chair of the Inter-Parliamentary Cooperation Agency (BKSAP) Putu Supadma Rudana stated that there were three important issues that were encouraged to become a joint commitment.
“The first issue is regarding regional peace and security,” he said.
He underlined that regional peace and security is the biggest capital in Indonesia’s relations with Pacific countries.
Meanwhile, the second issue is the issue of developing inclusive economic cooperation. The third issue is regarding cooperation in the social and cultural fields.
“In this case, education, tourism and international relations are also important concerns in discussions with the parliaments of Pacific countries,” he explained.
Indonesia itself, said Supadma, has always been committed to equitable development.
“We want to make it mainstream, so that they understand that we are providing a development commitment, from parliament encouraging the government to ensure that development in the west and east is equal. “With socio-cultural relations, respect for culture, respect for culture, finally there is respect, if he knows him, he will love him,” he said.
In this 2nd IPPP, the DPR RI proved its commitment by continuing to foster and even improve partnership relations with countries in the Pacific Region.
