President Jokowi Inaugurates Papua Street Carnival, Proving the Progress of Creative Industries from Eastern Indonesia
President Jokowi on Friday (7/7/2023) morning WIT officially opened the Papua Street Carnival which was held by the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy (Kemenparekraf), in collaboration with the Papua Youth Creative Hub (PYCH).
“By asking for blessings and grace from God Almighty, this morning, I officially declare the Papua Street Carnival opened and started,” said President Jokowi in the courtyard of the Papua Governor’s Office, Jayapura, Friday morning.
The inauguration of the Papua Street Carnival with the theme “The East Great Spirit”, was marked symbolically by President Jokowi by pressing a button together with Menparekraf Sandiaga Salahudin Uno, Head of BIN Budi Gunawan, and Plh. Governor of Papua, M. Ridwan Ruusukun.
It is known, PYCH is fostered by the State Intelligence Agency (BIN).
The inauguration was also attended by the Minister of Home Affairs, Tito Karnavian, Minister of State Secretary, Pratikno, Minister of Investment, Bahlil Lahadalia, Commander of the Indonesian National Armed Forces Admiral Yudo Margono, National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo, and other officials.
President Jokowi admits that he has seen the development of PYCH since it was inaugurated by him in March 2023, and is confident that young Papuans will achieve big leaps in the development of creative industries in this area.
President Jokowi highlighted PYCH’s progress in the field of fashion design, with excellent designs packaged with attractive brands. President Jokowi also mentioned the production of cellphones and laptops by young Papuans, an extraordinary breakthrough in the creative industry in eastern Indonesia.
“I believe young Papuans will do a big jump,” said Jokowi.
The President also hopes that tourism and the creative economy in Papua will develop more, have a positive impact on the people of Papua, and raise the image of Papua as a leading tourism destination with abundant creative potential.
Menparekraf Sandiaga Uno highly appreciates the works of PYCH youth.
According to him, the Papua Street Carnival is the first creative economy performance in the land of Papua. This is certainly a positive historical record for tourism development and Papua’s creative economy.
“Papua Street Carnival is a place for creative economy actors, a reflection of young people to advance Papua. And his creations are extraordinary, massive, lively, and God willing, they will go global,” he said.
Papua Street Carnival 2023 is a lively and great event, presenting the splendor of Papuan culture and its rich natural resources. With the success of the Papua Street Carnival, it is hoped that tourism and the creative economy in Papua will develop further and raise Papua’s image as a leading tourism destination at the international level.
President Jokowi accompanied by Sandi, Tito, Pratikno, Budi Gunawan and other officials before the inauguration visited exhibition stands from PYCH youth, such as the Waibu Agro Edu Tourism stand, laptop and cellphone brands from TOP.ID, Handicraft, screen printing, authentic FNB, Papua Coffee , PYCH Store, crafts to stands for other creative economy actors.
The Papua Street Carnival involves thousands of creative economy actors, thousands of performers, hundreds of fashion parades, hundreds of creative MSME exhibitions which are attended by more than 3,000 creative MSME actors who exhibit local creative products that reflect the expertise and creativity of the Papuan people.
Then, hundreds of decorative boats from traditional villages and local fishermen to the carnival. They display a variety of Papuan works and cultural heritage which are rich, beautiful and unique.
The carnival fashion designers are Ezterlin Baransano, Jenita Hilapok, Jeane M. Mariene, Eunike Yunita Raubaba (Unie), Alfa Mesak Suebu, Yan Pepuho, Yanpiet Pattynama (Pato), Hermin Rachel Makanuay, Lusy Sampary Umbora, Alfianty Mandosir, Irfais Marasabessy & Isak Osbabur (Painted Clothes). They are young PYCH mentored by BIN.
Papua Street Carnival displays starting from the Fuu Dance parade with the Tifa musical instrument. Then the parade of the 7 traditional Papuan territories begins with a replica of the giant Tifa, consisting of the traditional areas of Mamta/Tambi, Saereri, Doberai, Bomberai, Anim Ha, La Pago and Me-pago, to a parade of carnival dresses inspired by flora, fauna and wealth. culture in the Land of Papua. There is also the Papua Street Carnival Parade with 20 decorative pick-up vehicles carrying around 50 costume parades.
Marching band entertainment at several street points in the area around the Governor’s Office to people’s parties featuring dances, music, and stand-up comedy.
The entertainment stage performers included Shine Of Black, Mac (Music Anak Coment), Soundphoria, Fu And Tiffa Dance (Sanggar Miktam), Yospan Dance (Sanggar Honong), Pyhc Choir, Color Guard (Taners Papua) to the Jayapura Sman 4 Marching Band . This activity was also witnessed by thousands of Papuan people who attended from various regions.
