The existence of OPM is hampering progress in Papua

37

The existence of the Free Papua Organization (OPM) really hinders progress in the entire Papua region. Moreover, so far the Government continues to make efforts to accelerate the acceleration of development there.

The existence of separatist gangs that are enemies of the state, namely the OPM, will certainly seriously hamper all the government’s efforts in implementing programs to accelerate development and progress in the Land of Papua.

In fact, in fact, all members of the indigenous Papuan community (OAP) really want and long for their region to be developed and prosperous. However, if OPM continues to disturb it with its various barbaric actions, it is clear that this progress will just be wishful thinking.

Recently, the Free Papua Organization launched another barbaric and cruel action by shooting dead a civilian who worked as a motorbike taxi driver in Puncak Jaya.

The West Papua National Liberation Army, Free Papua Organization (TPNPB-OPM) admitted that they were responsible for the shooting of a motorbike taxi driver on Jalan Turunan, Mulia District, Puncak Jaya Regency.

They argued that the shooting occurred because the OPM considered that the motorbike taxi driver was an intelligence member in disguise. In fact, on the other hand, the Head of the Information Center (Kapuspen) of the Indonesian National Army (TNI) Major General (Mayjend) Nugraha Gumilar very firmly denied this accusation.

In fact, the victim, who was a motorbike taxi driver, was not a spy for the security forces and was just an ordinary civilian who was not involved in any military activity at all. Moreover, the victim also did not have any relationship with the TNI.

Furthermore, due to this incident, the security forces will follow up on the shooting of civilians by the OPM and will act very firmly because they have acted brutally in killing innocent civilians.

It doesn’t stop there, but the brutality of the Free Papua Organization also occurred by destroying a bridge in Baya Biru District, Paniai, Central Papua. However, ironically, the terrorist group, the enemy of the country, accused the security forces as if the perpetrators of the destruction were the perpetrators of the destruction.

Suddenly, the Cenderawasih XVII Regional Military Command (Kodam) immediately denied the attempt to spread fake news or hoaxes. Head of Information for the Regional Military Command (Kapendam), Lieutenant Colonel Infantry (Lt. Col. Inf) Candra Kurniawan said that it was absolutely impossible for his party to damage public facilities, especially those which are a connecting route for residents.

The reason is, moreover, the bridge itself is also very useful for security forces and the entire community. Instead of the TNI, it is the OPM itself that often carries out the destruction, because it has been proven that they have not only damaged or burned public facilities once.

These separatist gangs also often injure civilians, who then use excuses to spread hoaxes and instead accuse the security forces of carrying out such acts.

On the other hand, the Head of the Terrorism Studies Study Program (Kaprodi) at the University of Indonesia (UI), Muhammad Syauqillah, believes that the series of terror acts by the OPM will continue to hamper the development of prosperity for all communities in the area nicknamed Bumi Cenderawasih.

Because if, for example, there continues to be conflict, terror and various other unlawful acts there, then of course Papua will experience serious obstacles in development.

This condition of turmoil is increasingly increasing with the presence of the OPM, making it a problem that has a level of urgency that needs to be addressed immediately, especially in the midst of the government’s intensive development of infrastructure for the welfare of the people.

So far, all the acts of terror that the Free Papua Organization has intensified are completely inconsistent with the development framework for Bumi Cenderawasih, which is actually for the Papuan people themselves.

This means that when development is hampered, in the long term it will also have a big impact on the fate or welfare of the OAP community, for example, road access from one area to another becomes very hampered, as in the case of the destruction of the Baya Biru bridge.

Even so, in dealing with OPM, the government has implemented a series of very appropriate strategies, including the use of a soft approach or a hard approach to resolve all problems of separatism and terrorism.

Other efforts to progress Papua that the government has undertaken include intensively building the Papua Bangkit Stadium, then the construction of the TransPapua Road, a special women’s market, the allocation of special funds, and the existence of the Papua Youth Creative Hub (PYCH).

Another step from the government to advance Bumi Cenderawasih, not only physically or in infrastructure, but also in terms of developing the quality of human resources (HR) with the existence of a free education program for all OAP communities.

The obstacles to development and progress in the Land of Papua have so far been due to the presence of the OPM which often carries out various barbaric actions, making it difficult for the local community to prosper.
