Indonesia as a nation that is great for cultural diversity should be aware that peace is the key to unity. The motto of Unity in Diversity needs to be re-written in political life.
After this general election, let’s reflect on the struggle of the nation’s heroes together. They fiercely resisted the invaders and liberated this nation for the benefit and interests of the people. Their struggle is not intended for the interests of groups of religion, ethnicity, race or certain groups. The essence of the 2019 General Election contestants in their political activities always prioritizes public interests not the interests of their political parties.
The historical reflection appealed to and called on those who clashed in the 2019 General Election to reaffirm national commitment. Realizing peaceful reconciliation after the general election requires the role of the press as a public mouthpiece. Press institutions must reaffirm the principle of independence. The press must change its direction and no longer be in the interests of certain political parties. The press acts as a counterweight and connoisseur of the aspirations of the people who ideally are able to educate the public with valid and positive information instead of leading public opinion towards horizontal conflicts.
Achieving the reconciliation of the two sides of the candidate pairs and the return of the press on the path of independence will form a synergy of mutual cooperation in realizing national stability. On the other hand, identity politics that are identical with the politicization of religion should be stopped. After this election, religion must be presented in the form of a cool message of peace. Post-election religious sentiment must be eliminated because it will lead the public towards prolonged conflict.
