Students Join in Condemning Religious Violence

One of the student organizations, the University of Indonesia Student Executive Board (BEM UI), had made a controversial statement, because it seemed to criticize the disbandment of FPI. However, they denied it, because they did not support these mass organizations, and even condemned violence against a religious background that is generally carried out by FPI.
The dissolution of FPI brought various reactions to the public. There are parties who are happy because they are no longer worried because of the threat of sweeping. But unfortunately there are those who criticize the disbandment of these organizations, who knows what the cause is. Even though FPI has been proven to be an organization that has damaged peace in Indonesia.
The students from BEM UI gave a statement to the public regarding the dissolution of mass organizations carried out by the government. According to them, the incident was a step to silence the mouths of the people and violate human rights to express opinions in public. They also asked why there were mass organizations that were dissolved without trial.
Suddenly the public connected it with the disbandment of FPI, because this mass organization had just been declared banned by the government, at the end of December 2020. The public is confused, have they been exposed to radicalism and are even pro-Rizieq? However, BEM UI denied that they supported FPI and condemned the dissolution of the mass organization.
According to the Head of BEM UI Fajar Adi Nugroho, his party has never expressed support for FPI. The statement regarding the disbanding of mass organizations does not mean that they are pro-FPI and cursing the government. However, what is at issue is the legal process, when an organization is disbanded without a court process.
Fajar added that there should be no human rights violations when a mass organization is disbanded unilaterally. The public can lose the opportunity to speak out in the public sphere, because the government has taken away their freedom. In that sense, they think about the bad things about an event, and are paranoid when an organization is disbanded.
Actually students in yellow suits do not have to be afraid of human rights violations in Indonesia. This is because there is only one mass organization that was disbanded in 2020. If the government prohibits the public from expressing their opinion, all mass organizations in Indonesia will be dissolved indiscriminately.
The government will not commit human rights violations, because the mass organizations that violate human rights were disbanded. How can a mass organization scare people of other religions when sweeping without the authorities’ permission? They are clearly intolerant and do not understand the meaning of pluralism.
The dissolution of mass organizations such as FPI is also in accordance with the rules and does not violate the Law, because there is already a legal umbrella. Namely the Ministerial Decree and the Head of the Institution. In addition, the permit of the mass organization has not been extended by the Minister of Home Affairs General (ret) Tito Karnavian since 2019. So that de jure they do not exist and can be called illegal.
We recommend that BEM UI members be more careful in issuing statements in front of many people. Don’t let your words make other people misunderstand and accuse them of all kinds of things. Because 1 news like that can be “fried” by the hoax maker, so it is detrimental to both BEM and UI.
They should have read the news and the history of the establishment of mass organizations in Indonesia, as well as the licensing regulations. So that it will not make blunders like this, which make people think that they support FPI. As a student, don’t get emotional and accuse the government of all kinds, because there is no proven human rights violation.
BEM UI has indeed stated that they do not support FPI, but only criticize the process of dissolving mass organizations without a trial. People are really disappointed because they are not careful in expressing their opinions, because their statements make many people misunderstand. They should have held back more.
