Jakarta – The government has reaffirmed its commitment to eradicating online gambling practices that are increasingly rampant and detrimental to society. In a previous cabinet meeting, President Prabowo Subianto issued strict instructions that there be no protection for online gambling perpetrators. The President emphasized that the eradication of online gambling must be carried out comprehensively and continuously.

Minister of Communication and Digital, Meutya Hafid said that in the cabinet meeting, President Prabowo Subianto emphasized the importance of cooperation between related Ministries and Institutions to eradicate online gambling.

“He emphasized cross-ministerial and institutional cooperation to eradicate this problem (online gambling) completely,” said Meutya.

“President Prabowo also instructed that there be no collusion and will continue to ensure that this action does not only stop at closing the site, but also includes strict law enforcement against perpetrators and providers of online gambling services,” he added.

The President also emphasized special attention to the lower classes who often become victims of online gambling which results in the destruction of family economy and social welfare.

“The lower classes are the ones most affected, and the state must pay more attention to protecting them from the negative impacts of online gambling,” said Meutya.

Meanwhile, the Head of the Financial Transaction Reports and Analysis Center (PPATK), Ivan Yustiavandana revealed astonishing data regarding the circulation of money from online gambling.

“PPATK noted that the turnover of money related to online gambling in the second semester of 2024 reached IDR283 trillion, a significant increase compared to the first semester. In the past, online gambling transactions still used millions of nominal amounts, but now transactions can even start with a nominal amount of one thousand or ten thousand rupiah. This shows that online gambling transactions are increasingly massive,” said Ivan.

Ivan also added that the online gambling phenomenon is now increasingly spreading to younger age groups.

“What is more worrying is the demographic data that shows that online gambling players are getting younger. In fact, we have recorded a number of players under the age of 10,” Ivan said.

The government, through various Ministries and Institutions, is committed to strengthening coordination in efforts to eradicate online gambling comprehensively, with the aim of protecting the public, especially the younger generation, from the negative impacts of online gambling which are increasingly rampant.

The steps taken by the Government can raise awareness of all parties and reduce negative impacts that can threaten the morality and social stability of Indonesian society.
