JAKARTA — The commemoration of World Human Rights Day (HAM) which falls on December 10 is an important momentum for the Indonesian government to continue to strengthen its commitment to developing human rights in the country.

Through various strategic policies, the government wants to ensure that the principle of respect for human rights becomes the main foundation in all aspects of social, national and state life.

Member of the National Human Rights Commission 2012-2017, Siane Indriani, emphasized that for the first time in Indonesian history, President Prabowo Subianto’s government formed the Ministry of Human Rights.

According to Siane, this step shows President Prabowo’s seriousness in implementing the enforcement, protection, and fulfillment of human rights through various government programs that focus on community welfare.

“The program to fulfill Ecosoc rights such as 3 million houses for low-income communities, increasing the Regional Minimum Wage (UMR), and increasing teacher allowances are concrete evidence of the government’s commitment,” he said.

Siane also added that respect for human rights without discrimination is the basis for building a just and civilized nation.

The Minister of Human Rights of the Republic of Indonesia, Natalius Pigai, in an audience with the Indonesian Cyber Media Network (JMSI) on November 28, 2024, also emphasized his commitment to continue to maintain and uphold human rights values in Indonesia.

Pigai invited all elements of society to join hands in implementing government programs based on justice and equality, in line with President Prabowo’s Asta Cita vision.

“Respect for human rights is an important pillar that strengthens national unity,” said Pigai.

He also mentioned that the Ministry of Human Rights is currently formulating strategic policies to strengthen human rights protection, which is expected to be a guide for all parties in carrying out their responsibilities towards human rights.

Deputy Minister of Human Rights (Wamenham) Mugiyanto added that World Human Rights Day is an opportunity to reflect and plan the development of human rights in Indonesia.

“The theme ‘Harmony in Diversity Towards Golden Indonesia 2045’ is a forum for the community, especially the younger generation, to contribute to building awareness of human rights,” said Mugiyanto.

He also stated that although challenges still exist, Indonesia has shown progress in advancing human rights, and with the support of all parties, it is hoped that human rights development can continue to grow.

Through the spirit of World Human Rights Day, the Indonesian government is committed to creating a more just, inclusive, and harmonious country within the framework of respect for human rights. [*]
