By: Putra Sihombing
The National Sports Week (PON) XXI in Aceh-North Sumatra is not only a competition event for athletes but also an effort to promote local wisdom and the unique hospitality of the region.
The implementation of the National Sports Week (PON) XXI in Aceh and North Sumatra is not just the largest sporting event in Indonesia, but also an important moment to promote local wisdom and introduce the region’s distinctive hospitality to the entire archipelago. PON XXI, which will be held in 2024, is a golden opportunity for both provinces to showcase the unique cultures and traditions they possess.
The Acting Regent of West Aceh, Mahdi Efendi, invites all members of the community to actively participate in the success of LON XXI by continuing to provide their full support.
As hosts, Aceh and North Sumatra are very important in showcasing their unique hospitality, in line with the cultural values of the region known as the Land of Rencong, namely Peumulia Jamee, which emphasizes respect for every guest who arrives.
Being a good host is a shared responsibility, so it is also important to welcome all special guests from all corners of Indonesia with a friendly attitude while promoting local wisdom.
With the spirit of mutual cooperation and the thorough preparations made by the government well in advance, it is clear that all of these factors can positively contribute to the success of PON XXI Aceh-Sumut 2024.
According to Illiza Sa’aduddin Djamal, a member of Commission X of the People’s Representative Council of the Republic of Indonesia (DPR RI), the 21st National Sports Week is a golden opportunity for Aceh to showcase its best abilities and potential.
A strong commitment continues to envelop all parties to provide full support for the success of PON XXI. This event is not just about sports, but also a challenge to build a positive image of the region in the eyes of the nation and even internationally.
Meanwhile, the Chairman of the Aceh Ulama Consultative Assembly (MPU), Teuku Faisal Ali, emphasized the importance of cultural and religious aspects in the organization of the National Sports Week.
Moreover, because the region known as the Veranda of Mecca truly possesses cultural wealth and religious values that must be highlighted in every activity, including the implementation of the XXI National Sports Week.
With hard work and the commitment of all parties, from preparation to overseeing the success of the event, there is great hope that athletes and visitors will be able to experience the hospitality and local wisdom that are characteristic of Aceh.
Aceh and North Sumatra hold a wealth of local wisdom that is evident in their customs, arts, cuisine, and the socio-cultural values of their communities. In Aceh, the community preserves traditions such as Peusijuek, which symbolizes respect and peace.
Special culinary delights such as Aceh Noodles, Kuah Pliek U, and Gayo Coffee have successfully captured the world’s attention. North Sumatra is equally fascinating with its rich Batak culture, captivating Tortor dance, and traditional Ulos fabric that is full of meaning.
During PON XXI, athletes, officials, and visitors from all over Indonesia can experience this cultural richness firsthand. Local governments and organizing committees can hold accompanying events such as cultural festivals, culinary exhibitions, and local art performances to enrich the experience of the guests. These events will enhance appreciation for local wisdom and open economic opportunities for the local community through tourism and the sale of local products.
Furthermore, hospitality is a hallmark that makes Aceh and North Sumatra special. The community is known for being friendly and always welcoming guests with open arms. The organizers of PON XXI can take advantage of this hospitality by providing homestays with a traditional house atmosphere, allowing guests to experience the daily life of the local community.
By involving local communities as volunteers and tour guides, the interaction between local residents and visitors will create a positive impression. This step not only enhances the image of Aceh and North Sumatra at the national level but also introduces local hospitality to the international community, especially if the media and foreign delegations cover this event.
The PON XXI Aceh-Sumut is more than just a sports competition; it is a window that opens the world’s eyes to the cultural richness and hospitality offered by Aceh and North Sumatra.
By taking advantage of this moment to promote local wisdom and showcase the unique hospitality of the region, both provinces will not only make history in sports but also in strengthening cultural identity and developing the local economy. I hope that the XXI National Sports Week will be a successful event and inspire other regions to continue preserving and promoting their local wisdom.
