DPR Ensures Implementation of Constitutional Court Decision and Cancellation of Regional Election Bill
Jakarta, Suaradewata.com – Deputy Chairman of the DPR RI, Sufmi Dasco Ahmad, confirmed that the ratification of the Pilkada Bill was canceled and the decision of the Constitutional Court (MK) regarding the regional elections would remain in effect. This will also be applied to the registration of regional head candidates on August 27 2024. The Constitutional Court’s decision granted the lawsuit from the Labor Party and the Gelora Party.
The cancellation of the ratification of the Regional Election Bill and support for the implementation of the Constitutional Court (MK) decision are positive steps for democracy in Indonesia. This decision upholds the supremacy of law and respects the results of the Constitutional Court’s judicial review which accommodated the Labor Party and Gelora Party’s lawsuit. The implementation of the Constitutional Court’s decision during the registration of regional head candidates on 27 August 2024 ensures that constitutional rights remain protected and the democratic process runs according to applicable regulations.
This decision also shows that the DPR is able to listen to the aspirations of the people and avoid quick discussions that have the potential to be detrimental. Although the Pilkada Bill has sparked debate, by withdrawing it, the DPR is demonstrating its commitment to a more transparent and inclusive process. The ratification plan which was canceled because it did not meet the quorum also reflects the importance of a process that involves all parties.
