One of the real steps taken by the President of the Republic of Indonesia, who has been in office since 2014, is to accelerate infrastructure development in regions that have been left behind.

The infrastructure gap that occurs if left unchecked will worsen the condition of Papua and further widen the gap between regions in Indonesia. Therefore, President Jokowi considered that equitable infrastructure development in Papua is not only important from an economic perspective, but also as a foundation for the unity of the Indonesian nation.

The government’s success in controlling inflation in Papua is also an indicator that the economic policies implemented have succeeded in providing positive impacts. The Regional Secretary (Sekda) of Papua Province, Ridwan Rumasukun, revealed that Papua Province is among the 10 provinces with the lowest inflation rates.

From May 2023 to May 2024, inflation in the region fell from 2.39 percent to 2.18 percent. This decline is a significant achievement and shows the government’s efforts to maintain economic stability in the region nicknamed the Little Heaven in Eastern Indonesia. This success cannot be separated from the collaboration between the central and regional governments in implementing the inflation control program.

In addition to infrastructure development and inflation control, President Jokowi’s efforts to preserve Papuan culture have also received widespread appreciation. The Head of the Political and Government Information and Communication Working Team of the Ministry of Communication and Informatics (Kominfo), Agus Tri Yuwono, praised the diversity of Papuan culture which is a valuable heritage for Indonesia.

According to him, the richness of Papuan culture does not only belong to the local community, but is also an important part of the nation’s identity. In Agus’s view, the preservation of Papuan culture must be carried out with good collaboration between the central and regional governments, while also being supported by increasing digital literacy so that the young generation of Papua increasingly loves and understands its cultural values.

In addition to the cultural aspect, Papua also holds enormous economic potential. The abundant natural resources in the region nicknamed the Golden City must be utilized optimally for the welfare of the community.

President Jokowi sees that developing Papua’s natural potential, especially the mining and energy sectors, is one of the keys to improving the standard of living of the Papuan people.

The government has taken important steps to ensure that the results of natural resource management in Papua can provide direct benefits to local communities, through policies that support local economic growth.

Not only the economic sector, the government also pays attention to the social aspect by ensuring that Papuan people have equal access to public services, education, and health.

Infrastructure development projects carried out in Papua are not only to facilitate economic growth, but also to improve the quality of life of the community.

The construction of roads, bridges, and airports makes it easier for Papuans to access basic services, which were previously difficult to reach. This is in line with President Jokowi’s long-term vision of creating equitable prosperity throughout Indonesia, including in Papua.

The humanist approach implemented by the government under the leadership of the nation’s leader born in 1961 also played a role in creating more stable conditions in Papua.

Intensive dialogue with various elements of Papuan society, including traditional leaders and human rights activists, is key to maintaining peace in the region. The government continues to encourage active community involvement in the development and reconciliation process, so that a more harmonious relationship is created between the government and the Papuan people. With this approach, the conflicts that have often occurred in Papua can gradually be reduced, creating a more conducive climate for sustainable development.

Papua, with all the challenges it faces, remains a top priority in President Jokowi’s government policies. The full support from the community and various parties for the seventh President of the Republic of Indonesia reflects that the policies implemented are on the right track.

With a focus on infrastructure development, inflation control, cultural preservation, and peaceful dialogue, the government is working to create a more prosperous and competitive Papua. These efforts are also ongoing to this day, as part of a long-term commitment to building a better Papua.

Overall, President Jokowi’s leadership in facing challenges in Papua and maximizing the potential of the region nicknamed the Little Heaven that Fell to Earth has had a significant positive impact.

Papua is no longer seen as a backward region, but as a region that continues to develop and has great potential for the future of Indonesia. The public support that continues to flow to the Head of State is a reflection that the policies implemented are truly felt to be beneficial by the wider community, especially in this region that is rich in culture and natural resources.
