Government Consistently Cracks Down on Online Gambling, Thousands of Accounts Blocked
Jakarta – Eradicating online gambling continues to be the focus of the government, both at the central and regional levels. The Financial Services Authority (OJK) revealed that it has taken concrete steps to combat this illegal practice.
Acting Head of the OJK Literacy, Financial Inclusion, and Communication Department, M Ismail Riyadi, said that his party had asked banks to block thousands of accounts suspected of being related to online gambling.
“OJK asked banking actors to block approximately 8,500 accounts related to online gambling crimes during 2024,” said Ismail Riyadi.
This step was taken based on data submitted by the Ministry of Communication and Digital (Komdigi).
Ismail added that OJK is also coordinating with law enforcement officers to ensure that the eradication of online gambling is effective.
“In order to eradicate online gambling which has a wide impact on the economy and financial sector, OJK always coordinates with other Supervisory and Regulatory Institutions (LPP), including law enforcement officers,” he stressed.
In addition, OJK encourages banks to conduct Enhanced Due Diligence (EDD) and report suspicious transactions to the Financial Transaction Reports and Analysis Center (PPATK). This step is considered important to prevent misuse of the financial system in supporting online gambling activities.
Meanwhile, the Pariaman City Government is also actively involved in efforts to eradicate online gambling. Assistant I of the Pariaman City Government, Yaminu Rizal, said that the phenomenon of online gambling is a national problem that requires a comprehensive approach.
“I think the best way is to return to religious teachings, because there is no other way that is more effective,” he said.
According to him, religion strictly prohibits gambling practices which provide no benefits at all.
“Gambling is forbidden in religion, and there is no benefit to be gained from gambling,” he added.
The Pariaman City Government is committed to increasing public awareness about the dangers of online gambling by involving religious, traditional and community leaders.
“We will continue to remind them at every opportunity to meet with religious, traditional and community leaders,” added Yaminu Rizal.
The steps that have been implemented by the Government show its seriousness in combating online gambling which has a negative impact on society and the economy.
Cross-sector collaboration, including with community elements, is expected to significantly reduce the prevalence of this practice.
