JAKARTA – Pope Francis’ series of visits to Indonesia on September 3-6, 2024 are certain to take place solemnly and safely, with full support from various interfaith organizations. Indonesia’s diversity, which is a symbol of brotherhood and peace, will be reflected in the security of the Pope’s visit.
The General Chairperson of the GP Ansor Central Leadership, Addin Jauharuddin, emphasized that Banser is ready to play a role in securing the Pope during his visit.
“Banser’s involvement shows the showcase of Indonesia’s diversity. We want to show the world that Indonesia’s diversity is our strength,” said Addin.
Addin also reminded that Banser has experience in guarding places of worship on religious holidays, including Christmas celebrations in various regions.
In addition to Banser, the Muhammadiyah Youth Preparedness Command (Kokam) will also participate in this security. The General Chairperson of the Muhammadiyah Youth Central Leadership, Dzulfikar A Tawalla, stated that Kokam’s involvement was a form of hospitality from Indonesian Muslims in welcoming Pope Francis.
“We want to show harmony and diversity in Indonesia to the world community,” said Dzulfikar.
Atma Jaya Catholic University of Indonesia (Unika) has also assigned 100 students to volunteer for the grand mass at the Gelora Bung Karno (GBK) Main Stadium on September 5, 2024. Unika Atma Jaya University Secretary, Agustina Dwi Retno Nurcahyanti, explained that the volunteers will be tasked with arranging seating, ensuring orderly queues, and supporting the smooth running of the event.
“We hope that through the role of these volunteers, the grand mass can run smoothly and safely,” said Agustina.
Amidst the enthusiasm to welcome Pope Francis, there has been a rejection of negative actions that disrupt the harmony of this event. The Way of the Cross action planned by Catholic youth in Jakarta on September 4, 2024 with the theme ‘The Pope to Indonesia, what about the fate of God’s people in Papua’ is considered not in line with the spirit of brotherhood and peace brought by the Pope. Gusdurian National Coordinator, Alissa Wahid, emphasized that the Pope’s presence should be a moment to strengthen interfaith brotherhood, not to trigger conflict.
“The presence of the Pope should strengthen brotherhood in humanity, not the other way around,” said Alissa Wahid.
With strong security and full support from various organizations, Pope Francis’ visit to Indonesia is expected to run smoothly and solemnly, reflecting the true values of diversity and plurality of Indonesia.
