Jakarta – As part of his visit to Indonesia, Pope Francis will visit the Istiqlal Mosque and hold a dialogue with national interfaith figures, including the Grand Imam of the Istiqlal Mosque, Nasaruddin Umar.

Nasaruddin said Pope Francis’ visit would highlight real evidence of the tolerance built between the Cathedral Church and the Istiqlal Mosque. He stated that the Istiqlal Mosque, which is adjacent to the Jakarta Cathedral Church, is a real symbol of harmony, connected by the Silaturahmi Tunnel as a strong symbol of interfaith tolerance.

“Istiqlal and the Cathedral are not only symbols of tolerance between Islam and Catholicism, but also for all religions, because regularly, both in Istiqlal and the Cathedral, interfaith dialogues are often held,” said Nasaruddin.

Nasaruddin also emphasized that as a country with a Muslim majority, Indonesia has a responsibility to demonstrate tolerance and interfaith peace.

“Istiqlal Mosque, as a symbol of this spirit, always tries to show the face of Islam that is inclusive and full of love. Through interfaith cooperation and dialogue, Istiqlal Mosque continues to promote messages of peace and brotherhood,” Nasaruddin continued.

The arrival of Pope Francis in Indonesia is considered a historic moment for all religious communities in Indonesia. Nasaruddin emphasized that Indonesia must be a good host by welcoming guests warmly and respectfully.

“This is a golden opportunity for us to show the true hospitality of Indonesia. Let’s prove that Indonesians are always friendly in welcoming guests, whoever they are,” said Nasaruddin.

“Pope Francis’ presence in Indonesia will be an important marker that interfaith dialogue is not just discourse, but also a real practice on earth,” concluded Nasaruddin.
