The Issue of Postponing Elections Can Injure the Democratic Climate, JPPR Encourages Public Consolidation
Jakarta — The issue of postponing the 2024 general election is indeed very capable of hurting the democratic climate that has been built in Indonesia. Therefore, JPPR continues to encourage public consolidation to continue to be aware of the many issues related to the election.
The National Coordinator of the Voter Education Network for the People (JPPR), Nurlia Dian Paramita stated that all parties must be able to remain vigilant about the implementation of the upcoming 2024 elections.
Mainly, this vigilance is in the mirror of how the previous democratic party was held, which turned out to be quite a threat to the unity and integrity of the nation.
The reason is, there are lots of hoax issues, hate speech and so on, including the politicization of SARA.
“Through the rampant hoaxes, hate speech, the politicization of SARA, post-election riots, and others. There were even fatalities which should not have happened in celebrating this people’s sovereignty party,” he said.
Furthermore, JPPR also continues to highlight a number of issues or discourses that are considered capable of fading the spirit of democracy in Indonesia, especially ahead of the holding of the 2024 elections.
Some of them are the discourse on extending the position of the village head, abolishing the post of governor, postponing the election, and three terms of office for the president.
Nurlia explained that the existence of many discourses drains the community’s energy.
In fact, people’s energy should actually be used to consolidate in realizing strong integration in the implementation of the upcoming 2024 elections.
Moreover, it is clear that the issue of postponing the election for him has seriously damaged the democratic climate in the country.
“Moreover, these discourses seriously injure the democratic climate that was built in the reform era with efforts to perpetuate power by tweaking restrictions on public positions in this country,” Nurlia explained.
His party then requested that the holding of the 2024 elections be carried out according to schedule.
Because, according to Nurlia, the postponement of elections is something that must be eliminated.
He also strongly condemned the efforts to spread issues that caused the potential for national disintegration to occur.
“Condemn all forms of action that can create disintegration of the nation in the implementation of elections. Encouraging all parties to consolidate and prevent casualties from occurring during elections,” said Nurlia.
Meanwhile, KPU Commissioner, Idham Holik explained that literacy and knowledge for the public to fight hoaxes ahead of the 2024 Election is very important.
According to him, good literacy in society is the key to combating the circulation of hoaxes about the 2024 election.
“The key is having knowledge because often these hoaxes are unknowingly received by parties who do not have knowledge regarding matters discussed outside the public,” he said.
One of the fake news that was spread was the issue of a postponement of the 2024 elections.
The Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs, Mahfud MD then emphasized that there would be absolutely no delay in the 2024 Election.
“No extension, no delay. That is what the Government has shown with all the instruments prepared, and I am one of those who is responsible for the election being carried out properly,” said the Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs.
