Jakarta- Former Indonesian Ambassador to Ukraine who is also a Golkar Party politician, Yuddy Chrisnandi, stated that Indonesia’s real action in resolving the Israel-Palestine war is awaited by the world. This is because the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) does not have as much bargaining power as Indonesia.

“Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates do not have as much bargaining power as Indonesia in voicing the interests of Muslims,” said Yuddy in the Moya Institute Webinar entitled “Palestinian-Israeli Conflict: Opportunities for Resolution”, Friday (17/11).

He added that if all Muslims in Arab countries were gathered into one, they would not be able to match the number of Muslims in Indonesia. This portfolio is what makes Indonesia’s role anticipated in resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, compared to Arab countries whose stance is unclear.

On the same occasion, the General Secretary of PP Muhammadiyah, Prof. Abdul Mu’ti views the Israeli-Palestinian conflict from several dimensions. The first is the theological dimension. According to him, this conflict was caused by the theological claims of the Zionists who view the land of Palestine as the land of their ancestors. The second dimension, namely politics, is also strong in the Israeli-Palestinian war. Muhammadiyah considers a political solution more suitable to resolve the war.

“A two-state solution (Two-State Solution) is the most logical solution for resolving the conflict between the two nations, because according to the Israeli people they also have the right to live in that area, it’s just that so far they have been occupying Palestinian land, which is considered colonialism. ” said Mu’ti.

Meanwhile, the Chancellor of General Achmad Yani University, Prof. Dr. Hikmahanto Juwana said Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was qualified as a war criminal for his actions in attacking Gaza, Palestine.

But the problem is that Israel is not a party to the Rome Statute (1998), which allows him to be tried by the International Criminal Court (ICC). However, it could also be through another mechanism, namely a Security Council (UNSC-DK) resolution by issuing a resolution mandating the ICC to try Israeli leaders.

“But, in the future, the US will definitely veto this at the UN Security Council, so the world body will actually be like a ‘toothless tiger’,” he stressed.

Another speaker, Observer of Strategic and Global Issues, Prof. Imron Cotan, argued that there are differences between Jews and the Zionist movement. Jews are generally good, because they have similar religious rules with Islam. Meanwhile, Zionism is a political movement that wants the formation of a Jewish state on Palestinian land and rejects the establishment of a Palestinian state.

“So it is not surprising that some time ago one of the Israeli Ministers, Amihay Eliyahu, stated that it would be better if a nuclear bomb were dropped on Gaza.” Even though the casualties on the Palestinian side have reached 12,000, half of them are babies and children.

“Eliyahu’s statement was regretted by a number of groups, because after the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings, the world was guided by nuclear taboos, namely that although certain countries were allowed to have nuclear weapons, they were morally not allowed to use them,” said Imron.

Meanwhile, the Executive Director of the Moya Institute, Hery Sucipto, expressed deep concern and anger at the humanitarian tragedy that occurred in Gaza. Moreover, 50 percent of the victims of Israeli attacks were babies and children. And this is the largest number of victims since the 2000 Intifada.

“The Moya Institute took the initiative to hold this webinar to analyze developments that have occurred, read about possible potential solutions, including reviewing possible steps that Indonesia could take to play a more active role in efforts to create Palestinian-Israeli peace,” he concluded. [*]
