Peat Restoration Agency: Cost of Restoration the Peat Reach 12 Million Per Hectare

CIDISS – Land and Forest Fires that occurred in Indonesia several months ago requires handlers to the peat restoration. In fact, it needs a high cost.

The head of the Agency for the restoration of Peat (BRG), Nazir Foead as in Antara News Kalteng.com, said that the cost of restoring the land of peat needed around IDR 12 million per hectare in estimate five years.

Foead also mentions the calculations from the World Bank and CIFOR (Center for International Forestry Research) range of restoration costs ranged from IDR 6-36 million per hectare and it counted about IDR 12 million per hectare.

Foead stated that BRG was founded two months ago, and then the needs of the operational fund budgets come from the Ministry of environment and Forestry as well as funds from donors.

BRG in 5 years into the future has target doing a restoration of peat area of about 2 million hectares which are located in seven provinces this year and 800 thousand hectares in four counties.

Restoration is based on four criteria i.e. peat land, land cover conditions, the existence of the Canal and the impact of the development of the Canal, as well as historical fires in five years.

In addition, also based on the status of the land, topography and hydrological subsurface water flow, activities and socio-cultural conditions of the farming community.

Associated with the construction of the restoration, BRG is also completing guidelines and standard operational procedures of development of infrastructure, creation of seedbed peat wetting, planting on peat, and the installation of North Sumatra drill pipe.
