Jakarta – In his speech at the 2024 Indonesia International Sustainability Forum (ISF) Gala Dinner, Vice President Ma’ruf Amin emphasized the importance of transitioning to a sustainable economy as a response to the negative impacts of conventional economics. According to him, an economy that only focuses on short-term income has caused various global problems, such as the climate crisis, environmental degradation, social inequality, and loss of biodiversity.

“The transition to sustainable economic development is an inevitability and a global responsibility. This requires international cooperation, regulation, and a more binding global commitment,” said Ma’ruf Amin in front of hundreds of ISF delegates present at the National Monument (Monas), Jakarta.

Ma’ruf also emphasized Indonesia’s role in strengthening international cooperation through strategic partnerships and multilateral initiatives, including the ISF forum which provides an opportunity for world leaders and global experts to discuss and find joint solutions. “We are fully committed to encouraging efforts to mitigate the risks of climate change by adhering to the Paris Agreement and the target of zero emissions by 2060,” he added.

Furthermore, Ma’ruf highlighted various concrete steps that Indonesia has taken to support renewable energy, such as the development of solar and geothermal power, which have provided access to electricity to thousands of households. This program, he said, could be a model for other countries. In addition, empowering local communities through green growth that creates green jobs and sustainable agricultural practices is a major focus of the government.

On that occasion, Ma’ruf also invited world leaders to optimize international cooperation in the development of green technology. “This cooperation must be supported by all countries, both technically and financially, so that the global transition to a low-carbon economy can be realized fairly and evenly,” he said.

Rachmat Kaimuddin, Deputy for Infrastructure and Transportation Coordination of the Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs and Investment, added that the National Monument was chosen as the location for the gala dinner to reflect the spirit of ISF collaboration. “Monas reflects the historical values of Indonesia’s rise which are the driving force of global collaboration,” he said.

The ISF 2024 Forum is expected to produce real solutions that will encourage more sustainable and inclusive global economic growth, and contribute to a more prosperous and equitable life for the international community.
