People Must Be Wise in Using Social Media Ahead of Regional Elections

In today’s digital era, social media (medsos) has become the main platform for sharing information and discussing, especially in the run-up to regional head elections (Pilkada). The role of medsos in influencing public opinion and mobilizing voters cannot be underestimated. However, with that power also comes the responsibility to use this platform wisely. Given the importance of Pilkada in determining the future of the region, user awareness of the impact of each upload is crucial.
One of the biggest challenges on social media is the rampant spread of inaccurate information or hoaxes. In the run-up to the regional elections, various issues are often twisted or misinterpreted to discredit certain candidates. Therefore, it is important for every user to verify information before sharing it. Make sure the source of the information is credible and trustworthy. This is the first step to avoid the spread of fake news that can damage the reputation of candidates and deceive voters.
In addition to verifying information, social media users must also be critical of the content they encounter. Don’t just focus on headlines or titles that attract attention. Read carefully and examine the context of the information. In this way, we can distinguish between useful information and that which is merely provocative. Being critical in consuming information not only protects yourself, but also helps maintain the integrity of the public space.
Head of Public Relations of the North Maluku Police, Senior Commissioner Bambang Suharyono, emphasized that the public must be more careful in receiving and sharing information spread on social media ahead of the 2024 Pilkada. Then, his party also hopes that the public will be more careful in using social media and not spread information that is not yet clear.
On the other hand, social media can also be used as a tool to educate the public. Users can share information about programs, visions, and missions of prospective leaders. By spreading informative content, we help others make better decisions when voting. In addition, the invitation to discuss important issues can encourage more active involvement from the public, making the Pilkada not just a formal event, but also an event that involves many parties.
Communication ethics on social media are also important. Using polite language and respecting other people’s views is one way to create a healthy discussion. Avoid hate speech and personal attacks on candidates or their supporters. Creating a conducive atmosphere on social media is not only beneficial for yourself, but also for the community as a whole. Everyone has the right to have an opinion, and respecting different views is part of being mature in politics.
One thing that is often overlooked is the long-term impact of the digital footprints we create. Posts on social media can last a long time and be seen by many people, including future generations. Therefore, it is important to think long-term before posting. Ask yourself: “Is this useful? Will this add value to the discussion?” If not, it may be better not to share it. This awareness will help us become more responsible social media users.
Head of the Central Java National Unity and Politics Agency (Kesbangpol), Haerudin said that ahead of the 2024 Pilkada campaign period, his party is ready to monitor social media. This is one of the efforts to maintain conduciveness in Central Java ahead of the 2024 Pilkada. His party also encourages the younger generation to help maintain conduciveness during the Pilkada. The way to do this is by participating in providing positive and refreshing narratives in cyberspace.
In addition, invitations to participate in elections can also be conveyed through social media. Encouraging friends and family to exercise their right to vote is one way to increase voter turnout. Sharing information about how to register to vote, voting dates, and the importance of voting in a democracy will go a long way in building collective awareness. By inviting others to get involved, we contribute to creating a more active community that cares about the democratic process.
Public involvement in the Pilkada is not only about voting, but also about understanding each other’s role in determining the future of the region. In this case, social media becomes a bridge connecting prospective leaders and the community. Wise use of social media ahead of the Pilkada is an important step in building a healthy and transparent democracy.
With all the challenges and responsibilities that exist, being wise in using social media ahead of the 2024 Pilkada is the key to creating a healthy democratic atmosphere. Every individual has a role in building an informative and critical society. With awareness, verification of information, and ethical communication, we can make social media a means to strengthen democracy and encourage wider participation. Let us together use social media for positive purposes, supporting transparent, fair, and democratic elections, for a better future for our region.
