President Prabowo’s Support for 2024 Regional Election Candidates Based on Legal and Undeniable Political Rights
Jakarta – Gerindra Party Daily Chairperson, Sufmi Dasco Ahmad, emphasized that the support given by President Prabowo Subianto to the candidate pair in the 2024 Simultaneous Regional Elections did not violate existing regulations. According to Dasco, as President, Prabowo has the political right to convey support to the candidate pair, because it is done in accordance with applicable provisions.
Dasco explained that the incumbent President does have the right to participate in political campaigns, including calling on the public to vote for a particular candidate pair.
“The campaign activities must still comply with the established laws and regulations, such as regulating campaign leave times and the use of official facilities,” he said.
According to him, this is in accordance with the provisions contained in the General Election Commission (KPU) Regulations which regulate all forms of state official campaigns.
The Head of the Presidential Communications Office, Hasan Nasbi, also said something similar. He emphasized that President Prabowo’s invitation to support the gubernatorial and deputy gubernatorial candidate pair for Central Java, Ahmad Luthfi and Taj Yasin, was a statement delivered in his capacity as the General Chair of the Gerindra Party.
“The support given by Prabowo is part of his political rights as a party leader. As the General Chair, he has the right to provide support to the candidate pair supported by his party,” Hasan explained.
According to Ujang Komarudin, an academic from Al Azhar University Indonesia, the support conveyed by Prabowo is not a form of political intervention in the implementation of the regional elections.
“The support is legitimate because it was conveyed by Prabowo as the General Chair of the Gerindra Party, which supported Ahmad Luthfi in the Central Java Pilkada. There is nothing that violates the law or related regulations,” said Ujang.
Thus, despite his status as President, Prabowo still has the legitimate political right to support candidate pairs in the regional elections, because this activity is carried out within the applicable legal framework.
It is necessary to jointly maintain peace and order during the Pilkada campaign period. Do not be easily provoked by issues that are deliberately spread to divide.
