Prabowo-Gibran Government Affirms Continuation of IKN as Symbol of National Progress
JAKARTA – President Prabowo Subianto emphasized his commitment to the sustainability of the development of the Indonesian Capital City (IKN) as the new national capital.
“The impact of rising sea levels that are starting to inundate coastal areas is a serious challenge that must be anticipated,” said the President when met by media crews in Jakarta.
Therefore, the relocation of the capital city to East Kalimantan, according to the head of state, is a strategic step designed to respond to this threat while creating a more modern and resilient center of government.
In addition, the Special Staff of the Head of the IKN Authority for Public Communication, Troy Pantouw, added that the development of the IKN is part of the government’s grand vision to respond to environmental challenges while building an inclusive government ecosystem.
“Moving the capital city is a strategic step to overcome these various challenges,” he explained.
Infrastructure development in the IKN is a top priority. The Ministry of Public Works has received direct instructions from Prabowo to complete the construction of executive, legislative, and judicial infrastructure along with other supporting facilities by 2028.
Currently, the focus is directed at executive infrastructure which is targeted for completion by the end of 2024. In addition, housing and supporting facilities are being prepared to support the relocation of State Civil Apparatus (ASN) starting in 2025.
President Prabowo is targeting to start working in the IKN on August 17, 2028. That date will be an important milestone marking the readiness of Nusantara as a functional capital city. The relocation process is planned to be fully completed ahead of the 2029 Election, where the inauguration of state officials will be held in Nusantara.
As a legal step to strengthen, the change in Jakarta’s status from the Special Capital Region (DKI) to the Special Region of Jakarta (DKJ) has been officially enforced through Law Number 151 of 2024. This step will also be followed by the issuance of a Presidential Decree (Kepres) regarding the relocation of the capital city from Jakarta to the Archipelago.
“Soon, the Presidential Decree will provide legal and administrative certainty for this relocation process,” concluded Troy.
With these steps, the government hopes that the relocation of the capital city will be a symbol of change and progress for the nation.
