Brussels — The European Union and the Republic of Indonesia have officially agreed to establish a comprehensive strategic partnership. This agreement was announced in a joint press statement between the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, and the President of the Republic of Indonesia, Prabowo Subianto, held at the Berlaymont Building, EU Headquarters, Brussels, Belgium.

The strategic partnership encompasses three main pillars: enhancement of trade through the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), strengthening cooperation in geopolitics and security, and improving people-to-people connectivity.

Ursula von der Leyen stated that the CEPA agreement represents a major achievement successfully finalized under the leadership of President Prabowo, after more than a decade of negotiations. She emphasized that this agreement reflects the importance of a long-term relationship built on trust, transparency, and shared values between the European Union and Indonesia.

“CEPA will open new market access and create broad opportunities in various strategic sectors such as industry, agriculture, automotive, and services. We are committed to a predictable and mutually beneficial partnership,” said President von der Leyen.

In the fields of geopolitics and security, both parties agreed to elevate their bilateral relationship to a full strategic partnership. This agreement complements the cooperation already established between the European Union and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

“This cooperation will strengthen regional stability and reflect our long-term commitment to maintaining a rules-based international order. Essentially, we are building strong bridges between our societies,” she emphasized.

As part of efforts to improve people-to-people connectivity, the European Union announced the launch of a visa cascade system designed to facilitate the mobility of Indonesian citizens. Under this policy, Indonesians with a previous travel history to the EU will be eligible to obtain a multi-entry Schengen visa, simplifying visits, investments, study, and socio-cultural exchanges.

This strategic agreement marks a historic milestone in the relationship between Indonesia and the European Union. Under the leadership of President Prabowo Subianto, Indonesia has demonstrated a central role in building a modern, equitable, and mutually beneficial framework of international cooperation. Both parties are optimistic that this partnership will bring significant benefits for economic growth, geopolitical stability, and societal advancement in the future.
