Papua – The central government has again received strong support from Papuan indigenous communities for its strategic nickel mining development policy in eastern Indonesia. Prominent Papuan indigenous leader, Ondoafi Roliyanus Tapatkeding, expressed his appreciation and full support for the planned introduction of nickel industry infrastructure in West Papua, particularly in the Raja Ampat region.

In his statement, Roliyanus emphasized that nickel mining development represents a significant opportunity for Papua’s indigenous communities to accelerate regional progress. He viewed the industry’s presence as more than just an investment, but also a solution to various social issues that have plagued the community, from damaged infrastructure and high unemployment to the welfare of neglected children.

“We strongly support the central government’s move to bring nickel infrastructure to West Papua. With this investment, we hope that damaged roads can be repaired, bridges rebuilt, and our neglected children can have a brighter future,” said Roliyanus.

According to him, the direct impact of nickel mining development will be significant on the lives of the people of Raja Ampat. It will not only create new jobs but also create broader economic opportunities and increase local residents’ daily incomes. He emphasized the importance of accelerating the project’s implementation so that indigenous communities can immediately benefit directly.

“We hope this nickel development will be implemented soon. We want to propose that our children be involved and given the opportunity to work. They can earn an income and support their families. This isn’t just about mining, but about our sustainability,” he added.

Furthermore, Ondoafi Roliyanus urged all parties, including the central government, regional governments, and industry players, to establish harmonious cooperation and respect the role of indigenous communities in the development process. He hoped that the nickel mine would not simply exploit resources but would become a driver of inclusive and equitable progress in Papua.

The support of traditional leaders like Roliyanus Tapatkeding is a strong indication that the government’s policy of developing Papua through strategic sectors like nickel mining is on the right track. With local community involvement and an approach based on traditional wisdom, this development is believed to be a catalyst for sustainable economic transformation in Papua.

The government is also expected to maintain its commitment to ensuring that every development step in Papua is based on the principles of social justice and inclusivity. After all, Papua’s progress is ultimately Indonesia’s progress as a whole.
