The Government Accelerates Economic Transformation Through Food and Energy Self-Sufficiency
Jakarta — The Indonesian government is accelerating national economic transformation by strengthening the domestic food and energy sectors. This strategy is expected to lay the foundation for achieving national independence amid increasing global uncertainty.
Peter Abdullah, Economist and Executive Director of the Segara Research Institute, believes that the food and energy self-sufficiency policy is a strategic long-term step.
“Food and energy security are vital elements of national resilience. It’s not just about the economy, but also about national defense,” he said.
According to him, the government is developing a system capable of ensuring the availability and affordability of food and energy for all Indonesians, especially in emergency situations. This includes agricultural sector reform, increased production efficiency, and massive development of renewable energy.
The government is also focusing on the welfare of farmers as key actors in the national food system. Through improved incentive systems and fair pricing policies, it is hoped that the agricultural sector will regain interest among the younger generation.
“This step is very important to strengthen the national economic foundation of the village,” said Peter.
One of the government’s main focuses currently is strengthening superior commodities, such as rice. With its large production capacity and high harvest potential, Indonesia has a significant opportunity to achieve rice self-sufficiency in the near future.
Peter emphasized that self-sufficiency projects should not only be viewed from the quantity aspect, but also the quality of management.
“Policies must be data-driven, focusing on production management and price certainty. The government has already begun moving in that direction,” he explained.
This transformation also involves the development of logistics and distribution infrastructure, as well as restructuring the trade system to be more efficient and in favor of local producers.
The government’s long-term vision includes economic sovereignty, national stability, and strengthening logistical resilience.
“This is an investment for the future. With consistent policies, Indonesia can achieve self-sufficiency that is not merely symbolic, but truly supports national independence,” Peter concluded.
