Jakarta — As Indonesia approaches its 80th Independence Day, the government is urging the public to exercise wisdom in expressing their nationalist spirit. This includes refraining from being provoked by pop culture trends featuring pirate flags or other symbols that do not reflect the values of the nation’s struggle.

Minister of State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi stated that his office urges the public to distinguish between creativity and provocative actions. He noted that many parties frequently exploit creative expression, violating the sanctity of the Indonesian flag.

“The problem is when some parties exploit the creativity of our community members for inappropriate purposes. This is also inappropriate timing. This is August, Independence Month. Our independence wasn’t achieved by chance; it was the sacrifice of our heroes. We, as the younger generation, have a responsibility to safeguard that,” Prasetyo said.

Prasetyo reminded all parties not to be easily provoked by unconfirmed information. The government continues to respect people who want to show their creativity. He also assured that the government will not conduct raids on One Piece flags.

“Regarding the One Piece flag, which is related to communities as part of creative expression, once again, there’s no problem,” he said.

Previously, the Deputy Chief of Banten Police, Brigadier General Hengki, emphasized that he would take firm action against residents in his area who deliberately raised pirate flags during the commemoration of the 80th Anniversary of Indonesian Independence.

“If anyone is proven to have committed a violation and is not wearing the Red and White, of course we will take firm action,” said the Deputy Chief of Police.

According to him, the movement to raise a flag symbolizing pirates constitutes a form of provocation that could degrade the dignity of the Red and White flag. Furthermore, the movement could also harm the struggle of our predecessors who sacrificed themselves for Indonesian independence.

“We must be grateful for the struggle of our predecessors who fought with their hearts and souls to defend Indonesia’s independence,” he said.

He also hopes that the public will always show a sense of nationalism by flying the Red and White flag.

“So the hope is that all the Red and White flags will be raised,” he said.

The government hopes the public will remain focused on the noble values of independence, honoring heroes, and maintaining national unity. This way, the celebration of the 80th anniversary of the Republic of Indonesia will be even more meaningful, proud, and instill a spirit of optimism toward a Golden Indonesia 2045.
