The Government Improves Nutritional Quality in the MBG Program
Jakarta – Coordinating Minister for Political and Security Affairs (Menko Polkam), Budi Gunawan, emphasized that the government continues to accelerate the implementation of the Free Nutritious Meal Program (MBG) as a comprehensive strategy to build the quality of human resources from an early age.
“This program is a comprehensive strategy to build the quality of Indonesia’s human resources from an early age,” said Budi Gunawan in a written statement.
The MBG program is a national priority set by President Prabowo Subianto, with the main targets being school children, toddlers, pregnant and breastfeeding mothers, and students at Islamic boarding schools and religious educational institutions.
By the end of July 2025, this program had reached 7,374,135 beneficiaries through 2,375 active nutrition community kitchens or Nutrition Fulfillment Service Centers (SPPG). Meal menus are designed to meet 25–35% of beneficiaries’ daily nutritional needs.
The government’s efforts include not only expanding the reach of recipients but also improving the quality of nutrition provided. This is being achieved by strengthening oversight through the National Nutrition Agency, a national digital system, and involving local governments.
Each SPPG kitchen is targeted to serve an average of 3,000 people per day with serving standards that prioritize safety and nutritional balance.
“This is a concrete manifestation of the state’s presence in ensuring that no Indonesian child is left behind due to hunger or malnutrition,” added the Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs.
The MBG program was designed in response to the real challenge of malnutrition in Indonesia. To date, more than 100,000 jobs have been created through the involvement of MSMEs, farmers, fishermen, and local cooperatives in the production and distribution of nutritious food.
The government also utilizes a direct purchasing scheme from smallholder producers to stabilize food prices and empower the local economy. Through the Free Nutritious Meals Program, the government is committed to ensuring that every Indonesian child grows up healthy, strong, and able to compete in the future.
President Prabowo targets this program to reach 20 million beneficiaries by August 17, 2025, and 82.9 million by the end of the year. To ensure quality implementation, the government continues to refine logistics management, nutritional menus, and a digital-based distribution system to ensure the program’s efficiency, transparency, and targeted effectiveness.
“If our children are healthy and intelligent, the future of the nation will be more secure,” concluded the Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs.
