Government Intensifies Crackdown on Online Gambling, Prepares VPN Regulation and Blocking Technology
Jakarta – The government is stepping up efforts to eradicate online gambling by preparing regulations on the use of Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) and developing more effective blocking technology. The Coordinating Ministry for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs (Kemenko Polhukam) emphasized that this initiative is part of ensuring a safe digital space for the public.
Assistant Deputy for Data Protection and Electronic Transactions Coordination at Kemenko Polhukam, Syaiful Garyadi, explained that the policy is aimed at two main targets. “We are targeting two outputs: effective blocking technology and VPN regulation,” he said in a press statement in Jakarta, Friday.
According to him, VPNs are often used to access prohibited content such as online gambling and pornography, while so far there has been no clear regulation regarding their use. “The drafting of rules on VPN usage is intended to prevent these services from being used to access such negative content,” said Syaiful.
He further noted that the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs blocks thousands of illegal contents every week. “In one week, our colleagues at Komdigi cut access to 5,000 to 9,000 illegal contents. However, new sites reappear soon after. It’s like a firefighter putting out flames, but the source of the fire never dies out,” he remarked.
Therefore, the government is working to develop more advanced technology so that blocking access can be more effective and sustainable. “We want to ensure that access termination is not just temporary, but truly able to close the gaps in the spread of illegal content,” Syaiful stressed.
This firm step by the government has been welcomed by the public, especially considering the social impacts caused by online gambling. Many observers view the VPN regulation policy and strengthened blocking technology as proof of the government’s commitment to protecting citizens from both financial losses and moral harm resulting from online gambling.
The public also hopes this policy will be implemented soon so that Indonesia’s digital space becomes healthier and safer. Public support underlines that eradicating online gambling is not only the government’s responsibility, but also a shared awareness to protect the younger generation from the negative influence of cyberspace.
