Rice Production and Stocks Improve, Indonesia Moves Closer to Food Self-Sufficiency

JAKARTA — National rice production and stocks continue to show significant improvement, a remarkable achievement that confirms Indonesia is moving closer to food self-sufficiency.

Data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) shows that rice production for the January–July 2025 period reached 21.76 million tons, a 14.49 percent increase compared to the same period last year.

Meanwhile, national rice stocks in August 2025 reportedly reached 4.2 million tons, the highest level in history.

Minister of Agriculture Andi Amran Sulaiman emphasized that the national food situation continues to improve.

While visiting Palembang Jaya Market, Km 5, South Sumatra, he witnessed stable prices for staple foods, some of which have even decreased.

“We are monitoring this with the Minister of Home Affairs, and we are collaborating to stabilize prices. What has happened is that inflation has decreased from 2.37 to 2.31,” he said.

“This is one indication that our food supply is starting to stabilize,” said Amran.

He added that the government is preparing a large-scale market operation with 1.3 million tons of rice to make it easier for the public to access affordable food.

Home Affairs Minister Tito Karnavian assessed that the Food Supply and Price Stabilization (SPHP) rice program is very helpful to the people.

“This SPHP rice is not only cheap, but also of good quality. Bulog sells it at a more affordable price. This program is very helpful to the people,” he said.

He emphasized that with Bulog’s intensified SPHP, rice prices can be brought back under control, thus maintaining public peace of mind.

Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto emphasized that food self-sufficiency is part of national sovereignty.

“Our country must be able to stand on our own two feet. Our country must be economically sovereign and able to meet our own food needs,” the President said.

He added that the government is working hard to open millions of hectares of new rice fields, distribute fertilizer directly to farmers, and increase the purchase price of unhusked rice to IDR 6,500 per kilogram.

“Today, we have a rice production surplus. National rice reserves exceed 4 million tons. This is the highest in the history of the Republic of Indonesia,” he emphasized.

Improving rice production and stocks not only reduces dependence on imports but also ensures price stability and improves farmers’ welfare.

With this positive trend, Indonesia is on the right track to achieving food independence, making self-sufficiency no longer just talk but a reality. (*)
