JAKARTA – The commemoration of Heroes Day on November 10 has once again drawn national attention, coinciding with growing support for granting the title of National Hero to Indonesia’s 2nd President, Soeharto. Many believe Soeharto was a monumental figure who built the foundations of Indonesia’s economy, strengthened national stability, and launched development programs whose benefits are still felt today.

Support from national figures, state institutions, and civil organizations continues to reinforce the view that Soeharto deserves the nation’s highest recognition as a National Hero.

Speaker of the People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR RI), Ahmad Muzani, emphasized that there are no longer any barriers for the government to bestow the honor on Soeharto.

“The MPR sees no obstacle for the government to grant an award to President Soeharto. He made tremendous contributions to the nation and the state,” said Muzani at the Parliament Complex in Jakarta.

According to Muzani, Soeharto played a vital role in preserving national unity and laying the groundwork for long-term development. He added that granting Soeharto the title of National Hero would represent the state’s acknowledgment of his lifelong service.

“This is part of reconciliation and national unity. A great nation is one that honors the services of its predecessors,” he stressed.

Deputy Speaker of the MPR RI, Eddy Soeparno, also expressed full support for the proposal. He noted that Soeharto led Indonesia through difficult times yet successfully steered the country out of economic challenges.

“During his administration, Indonesia’s economy grew rapidly and remained stable. That was one of Soeharto’s greatest contributions to the nation,” Eddy said.

He emphasized that the achievements of Soeharto’s leadership are still evident today — from rural development and food self-sufficiency to strengthening the agricultural sector.

“Every head of state has their shortcomings, but Soeharto’s contributions to this republic far outweigh them,” he added.

Deputy Chairman of the House of Representatives’ Commission I, Dave Laksono, also noted Soeharto’s many accomplishments, both nationally and internationally.

“He succeeded in maintaining macroeconomic stability for decades. Infrastructure development expanded nationwide, producing tangible benefits for the people,” Dave explained.

He further added that Soeharto was highly respected abroad and played a key role in strengthening Indonesia’s position within ASEAN and the Non-Aligned Movement. According to Dave, this international recognition underscores that Soeharto was a great leader deserving of national honor.

Chairman of the Board of Titles, Decorations, and Honors, Fadli Zon, stated that the proposal to grant Soeharto the title had undergone formal reviews, academic seminars, historical publications, and public input.

“All nominees this year meet the requirements, including President Soeharto,” he confirmed.

With broad public support, many hope that the 2025 Heroes Day commemoration will become the right moment for the state to officially declare Soeharto a National Hero — as a tribute to his service in building the nation, improving the welfare of the people, and safeguarding Indonesia’s unity.
