Jakarta – President Prabowo Subianto’s decision to award the National Hero title to labor activist Marsinah has received widespread appreciation from workers. The move is seen as tangible proof of the President’s support for the labor movement and his commitment to fulfill the promise he made during the International Workers’ Day (May Day) 2025 commemoration at Monas.
President of the Confederation of All Indonesian Trade Unions (KSPSI), Andi Gani Nena Wea, described the decision as a historic moment for the national labor movement.
“We are grateful to President Prabowo Subianto for this extraordinary honor. This was his promise during the May Day event at Monas, which he has now fulfilled. Our spontaneous request on stage has been answered,” he said at a press conference in Jakarta.
According to Andi Gani, state recognition of Marsinah marks an important step in the history of Indonesia’s labor struggle. Marsinah, he said, symbolizes the courage and resilience of workers fighting for social justice.
“Ms. Marsinah was a member of KSPSI at PT Catur Putra Surya (CPS) when she was killed while advocating for workers’ rights. Her fighting spirit will always live on,” he added.
Marsinah’s elder sister, Marsini, also expressed her deep emotion and pride over the national recognition of her sister. She recalled first hearing the news from a journalist in early May 2025, coinciding with the May Day commemoration.
“I was preparing a gathering with Marsinah’s friends at home when suddenly a journalist informed me. Honestly, I was very moved and could hardly believe it,” she said.
Marsini admitted that she had been cautious about the news while waiting for official confirmation. Now, after the verification process was completed, she is grateful that the title is indeed being awarded.
“Alhamdulillah, it is now clear that the National Hero title will officially be given. I am deeply thankful, especially to President Prabowo Subianto, who has fulfilled his promise on May Day 2025,” she said.
She hopes that Marsinah’s National Hero title will serve as a reminder to younger generations of the importance of advocating for workers’ rights and maintaining the spirit of solidarity.
The award not only honors Marsinah’s sacrifice but also symbolizes the government’s commitment under President Prabowo’s leadership to uphold social justice and improve the welfare of workers in Indonesia.
