Indonesia, India to Promote Islam as Religion of Peace

jokowi-indiaPresident Joko “Jokowi” Widodo yesterday held a bilateral meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Hyderabad House, New Delhi, India. Afterwards, Jokowi received a courtesy call from Indian Vice President Mohammad Hamin Ansir at the Presidential Suit of The Leela Palace Hotel.

Quoted from an official statement of the Presidential Secretariat Press, Media and Information Bureau on Monday, December 12, 2016, Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi explained that Jokowi and Ansari discussed cooperation between them to promote Islam as a religion of peace.

“A cooperation to promote Islam that is peaceful and rahmatan lil ‘alamin [blessing for the whole world and its content]. Indian vice president is also a Muslim. Indonesia is a country with the largest Muslim population. India ranks second with its Muslim population of 170 million,” Retno said.

Aside from Retno, Jokowi was also accompanied by the Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Darmin Nasution, State Secretary Minister Pratikno and Indonesian Ambassador to India Rizal Wilmar Indrakesuma.

President Jokowi and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a bilateral meeting at Hyderabad House, New Delhi, signing three memoranda of understanding on trade standardization, sports, and eradication of illegal fishing.
