Prabowo Emphasizes Preservation of Historical Buildings as the Foundation of National Identity
Jakarta — President of the Republic of Indonesia, Prabowo Subianto, stressed the importance of preserving historical buildings and sites as the foundation of the nation’s identity amid the acceleration of national development. He emphasized that development must not come at the expense of cultural heritage that bears witness to Indonesia’s struggle.
“Indonesia has a bitter past under imperialist colonization. At that time, the indigenous people were treated very inhumanely. Yet the historical evidence that should serve as lessons for the younger generation is gradually disappearing,” said Prabowo during a briefing at the National Coordination Meeting of regional leaders in Sentul, Bogor, West Java.
According to President Prabowo, historical buildings hold strategic value because they document the nation’s journey, sacrifices, and the spirit of struggle of the predecessors. Therefore, national development efforts must proceed in balance with the protection of historical heritage.
“National development must not erase historical buildings for the sake of offices or factories. Preserving history is a form of respect for the nation’s heroes and a way to maintain the character of our people,” Prabowo affirmed.
The President also reminded regional governments that their responsibilities go beyond physical development and investment; they must also protect and safeguard cultural and historical heritage within their territories.
President Prabowo highlighted the demolition of the former Bung Tomo radio station on Jalan Mawar, Surabaya, a historical site where the November 10, 1945 speech was delivered, despite its designation as a cultural heritage site by the Surabaya city government since 1998.
“Where have our historical sites gone? We must ensure that our heritage sites are not lost,” Prabowo said.
The preservation of cultural heritage plays a crucial role in fostering historical awareness and instilling nationalism in the younger generation. By safeguarding historical sites, Indonesia can ensure that the values of struggle remain alive and relevant in the future.
President Prabowo believes that sustainable development must be grounded not only in economic strength and infrastructure but also in the preservation of culture and history. This synergy is expected to strengthen national identity while ensuring that development does not lose direction or the nation’s sense of self. [-RWA]
