Jakarta – Several Red and White Fishermen’s Village (KNMP) units are now operating in various coastal areas as part of the government’s efforts to improve the welfare of fishermen. These units are expected to strengthen economic activity, improve the fisheries production chain, and encourage the independence of coastal communities.

The Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) has recorded that 19 KNMP units have been completed and are fully operational. In the first phase of KMNP development, the government targets 65 KMNPs to be completed by May 2026.

President Prabowo Subianto has launched the strategic “Red and White Fishermen’s Village” program to modernize 12 million fishing villages across Indonesia. The government is not only providing infrastructure but also facilitating various fishing technologies.

Under this ambitious plan, the government plans to distribute fishing vessels ranging from 5 gross tonnage (GT) to 30 GT to increase fishing capacity and the welfare of local fishermen. The President aims for at least one 30 GT vessel per fishing village to operate.

“We already have a pilot project in Biak (Papua) that has been proven to increase farmers’ yields by almost 60 percent,” said President Prabowo.

Meanwhile, the Special Staff of the Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries for Public Relations and Media Communication, Doni Ismanto, said that of the 65 KMNP units to be built, 19 units have been completed and the rest are still under construction with 80 percent progress.

“Of the 65 locations we’ve built, 19 are 100 percent complete and operational. The remaining locations are at an average of 80 percent progress,” said Doni.

Several locations are now fully operational, including Tolitoli, Bumiharjo, Pujiharjo, Lebetawi, Gebang Mekar, Karang Duwur, and Poncosari. The Bentenge KNMP in Bulukumba Regency, South Sulawesi, achieved the proud achievement of exporting nearly one ton of fresh fish to Saudi Arabia on January 9, 2026.

“There are already exports from Eastern Indonesia. The commodities depend on the potential of each region,” he said.
