Fuel and Basic Necessities Secured, Time to Shop Wisely Ahead of Eid

As Eid al-Fitr 1447 Hijri approaches, the dynamics of the market for basic necessities always draw public attention. Shopping ahead of the holiday has long been part of Indonesia’s cultural tradition. Demand for commodities such as rice, cooking oil, sugar, meat, and fuel usually increases significantly during this period. However, this year the government has assured that the national supply of food and energy remains well maintained. This situation should serve as a moment for the public to shop more wisely and rationally.
The central government, together with regional governments, has actively moved to maintain the stability of supply and prices for basic necessities. The Minister of Home Affairs, Tito Karnavian, reminded the public not to engage in excessive purchasing or panic buying of staple goods such as rice and fuel. The appeal was conveyed in response to concerns among some members of the public regarding potential price spikes or shortages ahead of Eid.
According to Tito Karnavian, national stocks of essential commodities are currently at a very safe level. The government has recorded national rice reserves reaching approximately four million tons, while fuel supplies are also adequate to meet public demand throughout Ramadan until Eid. Under these conditions, there is no reason for people to purchase goods excessively, which could instead disrupt distribution stability in the field.
In many cases, panic buying often becomes the trigger for market disruption. When people buy goods in large quantities due to excessive concerns, supply chains that are actually stable can become pressured. This situation may create the perception of scarcity that does not correspond to the actual conditions on the ground. Therefore, the government continues to encourage the public to remain calm and shop according to their needs.
In addition to ensuring national stock availability, the government has also strengthened coordination with regional authorities. The Ministry of Home Affairs has instructed all regional leaders to hold internal coordination meetings with distributors and business actors to ensure smooth distribution of food and energy in their respective regions. This step is important to prevent logistical obstacles that could potentially trigger price volatility at the local level.
The policy is also complemented by instructions for regional heads to remain in their areas of duty during the crucial period leading up to Eid. The direct presence of regional leaders is considered important in overseeing price stability, ensuring smooth distribution, and maintaining public security during the homecoming travel season and holiday period.
At the national level, maintaining food stability is also a major focus of the administration of Prabowo Subianto. The president directly summoned the Coordinating Minister for Food Affairs, Zulkifli Hasan, to ensure the readiness of national food supplies ahead of Eid. In his directive, the president emphasized that staple goods must remain sufficiently available and affordable for the public.
Following this directive, Zulkifli Hasan conducted direct monitoring in various regions to ensure that the distribution system is functioning properly. Regional governments are also encouraged to organize affordable food bazaars and market operations to maintain price affordability for the public. The government has even allowed regional administrations to utilize contingency funds to support transportation subsidies for distribution or direct price subsidies for the community.
Meanwhile, market price supervision has also been strengthened. The Minister of Trade, Budi Santoso, stated that the government continues to monitor price developments through the Basic Needs Market Monitoring System (SP2KP). This system observes daily price movements in more than 550 markets across hundreds of districts and cities throughout Indonesia. Through this monitoring mechanism, the government can respond quickly to potential price increases in specific areas.
Synergy between central and regional governments can also be seen in various initiatives at the local level. Several regional governments have held large-scale market operations and affordable food programs to ensure that communities can obtain basic necessities at reasonable prices. These programs not only help maintain public purchasing power but also strengthen market stability ahead of the Eid momentum.
In a broader context, the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Indonesia has also been educating the public on the importance of rational shopping through various food literacy programs. One such initiative encourages people to understand the condition of national food stocks and to avoid excessive consumption.
The government is also implementing the Affordable Food Movement (GPM) and the distribution of rice through the Food Supply and Price Stabilization program (SPHP) to ensure stable supplies in traditional markets. Through these programs, key commodities such as rice, sugar, cooking oil, and other food items are distributed at more affordable prices for the public.
With these various measures in place, it can be concluded that the government has been working systematically to maintain the stability of national food and energy supplies. Fuel availability remains secure, national food stocks are well maintained, and various policy instruments have been prepared to control prices in the market.
Therefore, the role of the public becomes an important factor in maintaining this balance. Shopping wisely, avoiding hoarding, and purchasing according to actual needs are simple yet meaningful steps in helping maintain market stability.
