JAKARTA – The Red and White Village Cooperative (Kopdes Merah Putih) program is considered to play a strategic role in strengthening rural community economies through transparent, professional, and participatory management. The presence of village cooperatives serves as a platform to develop the social potential of rural communities while collectively improving welfare.

A social observer from Syiah Kuala University (USK) in Banda Aceh, Firdaus Mirza, stated that the establishment of village cooperatives is an important step in revitalizing the spirit of collective economic activity that has long been part of rural community life.

“The formation of village cooperatives can be understood as an effort to revive the collective economy of rural communities. Since the past, village communities have had a strong tradition of solidarity such as mutual cooperation and collaboration in various social and economic activities,” he said.

According to Firdaus, cooperatives serve as institutional instruments capable of facilitating these social values so that they can develop into productive economic activities. With an organized platform in place, the social potential of rural communities can be directed toward strengthening shared prosperity.

He explained that from the perspective of economic sociology, cooperatives have the ability to improve the bargaining position of rural communities within the economic system. Through collective movements, communities can manage economic potential together, thereby gaining stronger leverage in facing market dynamics.

“Cooperatives can expand access to capital, improve collective production management, and open wider market opportunities for products from rural communities,” Firdaus said.

In addition, he emphasized the importance of transparent and accountable cooperative governance to maintain the trust of members. According to him, the active involvement of cooperative members is the main strength in ensuring that management runs in an open and professional manner.

“Involvement, active participation, and a sense of ownership from the community are key factors that determine the sustainability of village cooperatives,” he explained.

Firdaus also assessed that cooperatives function not only as economic institutions but also as social spaces that strengthen solidarity and togetherness among members.

He added that the success of the Red and White Village Cooperatives can be seen from increased member income, high community participation in cooperative activities, and the growth of economic activities based on local potential and wisdom in each region.

“With proper management and strong community participation, the Red and White Village Cooperatives have the potential to become an important pillar in promoting rural economic independence and strengthening sustainable community welfare,” he concluded.
