Potential for Increasing Political Climate in Jakarta

CIDISS. The political temperature in the capital has the potential to heat up due to the competition in the 2019 Presidential Election. The warming up of the situation was triggered by the attitude of the supporters of each candidate. According to the Head of DKI Jakarta Community Early Warning Forum (FKDM), M Rico Sinaga revealed that the results of the investigation and early detection of FKDM, the political escalation has the potential to heat up between supporters of presidential candidates and vice presidential candidates.

The statement certainly has a reason. If we examine more deeply, then Jakarta is the capital of Indonesia where it is one of the most populous cities in Indonesia. Not to mention, various ethnic groups live in Jakarta. On the other hand, this is a good thing because it signifies that the tolerance between people is very high so it does not attach importance to differences. But on the other hand, this is actually easy to trigger the occurrence of divisions with ethnic, religious, racial and inter-group backgrounds.

As with the DKI Jakarta regional elections in 2017, the political situation in DKI Jakarta was easily heated up during the 2019 general election. Based on Amnesty International’s Executive Director, the Indonesian representative, Usman Hamid, stated that the implementation of the 2017 DKI Jakarta regional elections was proof of Indonesia’s decline in rights protection. human rights, especially in matters related to democracy. One of the aforementioned events is the 2017 DKI Jakarta Regional Head Election which had heated up and was associated with a case that ensnared the inactive Governor of DKI Jakarta Basuki Tjahaja Purnama.

In the democratic event, it emphasizes the difference between majority and minority groups, and there is a dominant cultural view, as if group values should be prioritized above individual values. This is very contradictory to the regional assumption that democracy in Indonesia is often considered the best in Southeast Asia. The international world fosters hope in Indonesia in upholding human rights and democracy. However, the assessment is contradictory to the actual situation.

Constitutional law expert Refly Harun said, legal culture in Indonesia was very lagging behind, causing many people who were not law-abiding. In fact, a number of people began taking non-legal channels to impose their will. From this example, the political climate in DKI Jakarta is prone to heat up again in 2019. However, this can be prevented if all parties are able and willing to realize the 2019 general election that is peaceful and fair for all parties.
