Timor Leste’s Prime Minister, Mr. Xanana Gusmao, has submitted his resignation as a Prime Minister on 6 February 2015. Mr. Gusmao, 68 year old, was a former Guerilla leader who helped Timor Leste get their indepence from Indonesia in 2002. He crowned as a hero and also become Timor Leste’s first President after that.

Actually, Mr. Gusmao has delayed his resignation for several times before. Analyst thinks that he did it because he wanted to make his government clean from corruption that accused to some of the ministers from his coalition.

“The government confirms that the prime minister of Timor-Leste, H.E. Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão, has sent his letter of resignation from the post of prime minister to the president of the republic, H.E. Taur Matan Ruak,” a government statement said in the official website. “It is now for the president of the republic to consider and respond to the letter of resignation.”

In the other hand, the government statement also said that they are on their way to make a major restructure of the government. “Authorities want to reduce the size of the executive to create a more efficient and functional body focused on results, and allow opportunities for a younger generation of leaders to make a contribution to the nation,” the statement said.

If President Taur Matan Ruak accept Mr. Gusmao’s resignation, he will remain as the Prime Minister until his successor elected. Xanana Gusmao might also have a new role in the new government in order to make the restrusture and the transition goes smooth and well.
