President Joko Widodo arrived in Paris late Sunday, November 29, to attend the UNFCCC COP21 Climate Summit, carrying the message that Indonesia has the interest in working together in facing challenges of climate change.

“We give political support, just like at previous conferences, we give our commitment,” the president said before departing for Paris, France.

The president also said that Indonesia has 17,000 islands and will be impacted if the sea water level rises because of climate change. So, Indonesia has the interest to make sure the impact can be minimalized.

Indonesia also had submitted her commitment in reducing emissions of greenhouse gases.

“We will later convey real actions that we will do including peat restoration, review of existing permits, and moratorium [of permits],” said Jokowi.

President Jokowi is scheduled to return back to Jakarta on Wednesday next week.

More than 190 nations will gather in Paris for the The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) 21st session of the conference of the parties (COP). The conference is scheduled to begin Monday, November 30, 2015.

This year’s conference is significant because for the first time it will aim to achieve a legally binding and universal agreement on dealing with climate change.
